Hi ! I feel for you. We did put one in a U kitchen once with about 7 in the middle. Would not do again. If only one person works they can deal with a tight aisle BUT. If you put near fridge - it might bump. If you put near dishwasher / oven - you are boxed until it is lifted. If people want to congregate or help HECK NO!

I have less space and have an island and yes, it is a one person kitchen but I like that -- IMO cooking is not. a team sport!

I like double galley if a good size (to me that means at least 12*9 but 14*10 preferred) and the sink is "in the middle" as yours might be. I am jealous of those prep areas! You have nice room for people to move and open things without hitting them. Room for more than one cook. One of those corners would be great for a toaster and coffee pot and the kids lunch boxes in the other ;-)

Short answer- no :) Do you feel you need an island for functional purposes or just think so because others mention it? :) Looks like you have lots of storage and lots of counter space! An island will just be something you need to walk around to get to the other side, and then you'll get sick of it, put it in the cellar, and eventually sell it at a garage sale.

I had a kitchen with counters about the same distance apart. So nice! Able to open the cupboard on both sides, or the oven or frig door... nothing whacks into something else. Easily able to cook with others or chat with others, stand around etc. Plenty of room. It's a really nice kitchen!

Not every kitchen needs an island. As it is, more room for that cute kid to run around.

No, an island won't work at all in this area.

For what it's worth, I have the same problem: A galley kitchen with two cabinet runs that are too far apart to "play nicely together", yet is too narrow for an island.

take out a partition wall. It will open the kitchen on one side or the other. then do island if it fits the style of everything and if you want openness. but a wall would go. Might be nice. the kitchen is big, but not a particular asset. It's a redesign you would do, so you would get a budget and plan.

In general, no to nothing stationary. Not enough space. A island cart on wheels possibly or narrow table.

Definitely not room for an island in the current configuration.

I could see lots of ways to remodel this kitchen - but I wouldn't be in a hurry to do so.

Where are the top drawers?

If you put in an island how would you open the DW door, the oven door, the lower drawers, the cabinet door and the freezer door, and then stand in front of all of them to do whatever. If the island was movable you would be shoving that thing back and forth all day and then so would the kid.

If you get something with wheels, make sure they can lock ;)

I don't know...I get the op asking. For some reason, it really bothers me to be chopping and mixing and stuff, against a wall. I feel a bit claustrophobic doing so.

I agree about a narrow island on wheels...You can turn it perpendicular to the sink when you're working with veggies and wash-y things...

Do you actually need an island? It seems to me that you have enough prep space on the existing countertops. Plus, your kitchen is lovely and spacious although it is a galley kitchen. It's golden. If you think you could use some more prep space, you can get a narrow table. But I think it will just get in your way.

I think people ask that only because islands are so expected, a trend of sorts. I had my island REMOVED from my kitchen when I remodeled a dozen years ago. It looks & functions so much better without it.

Perhaps a peninsula and deeper perimeter counters could be configured to work. An island will not.

The poster needs to be happy in their kitchen, so perhaps something like this could be retrofitted in somewhere, if an island is desired. Provides extra space, but goes away so it's no longer in the traffic pattern.
