Why not use cedar board and batten?

The overall cost is affected by materials, labor, and contractor overhead cost. The difference in cost is a fraction of a fraction: not much, on a relative basis. The first fraction comes from the materials as a percentage of overall cost and the second fraction comes from the difference in cost between cedar and the other options. The cost of cedar is specific to where you live and the species of cedar. Do what looks best to you. The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

Thanks for all the advice, but we have a huge problem with woodpeckers here. So looking for something more resilient. Just changing the at this time, so will probably be changing the cedar siding at a later date.

We used to have a wood pecker that woke us every morning as he pecked on the cedar siding looking for bugs. My husband sprayed the siding to get rid of the bugs. With no bugs, the woodpeckers had no incentive to peck on our siding.

Vinyl will be less expensive. I understand about the woodpeckers.......so frustrating
