Behind range tile dilemma

last modified: 7 years ago

I'm back for more advice. Thanks Houzz helpers!

I am planning on Datile matte cream 3 x 6 subway tiles for my backsplash to my beautiful Cambria Crowndale counter-top. My dilemma is what to do behind the range. I thought about a mural but nixed that. I don't like a large dark area of 1 X 1 tiles. I want something simple but have poured over pictures and cannot find anything I like.

- New build (not framed yet)

- Maple cabinets (darker stain)

- 4' X 4' skylight above island so lots of light (New Mexico)

- Open floor plan so range area will be viewed from Family Room

- 10' ceiling

- Stainless steel appliances

- 30" range, 36" vent hood

Any advice, pictures of what you have and love or anything would be so helpful as I am stuck on this detail.

Why do you dislike the idea of continuing the subway tile as in your rendering?

That is what I may end up doing but looking for other nice options.

Okay that's two for keeping just the subway tile!

Same tile! No accent behind the range...

Same tile! But I would take advantage of accessorizing your new kitchen with beautiful, colorful NM pottery and art. It will be gorgeous!

As the picture, clean and simple which goes with the cabinets.

Thank you everyone! I will keep it simple and clean and keep the tile :-)

I would add a pot filler, it will break up that tile nicely. That is what I'm doing in my reno as the plain tile back splash to me personally is missing something.

It's fine to use one tile for the space if that's what pleases you. But, I would consider checking other tile options; the more basic builder options in matte finishes can look very flat, institutional.

A functional option is to use a stainless shelf above your range. We have a subway tile backsplash and used the Grundtal shelf from Ikea that has been discontinued but can be found on eBay. It is a rodded shelf, not solid, so it doesn't block effluent rising from the range top. Here it is on a magazine cover and in a pic of the old TV show Brothers and Sisters. We attached blocking to the studs behind the drywall so that the shelf brackets could be hidden behind the tile. You need to plan for the blocking.

I would go with just the plain subway. It should look fine. We did something similar, and although I love tile details, I'm fine with just plain tile behind the range. With your picture, you just show the range wall, but you will be looking at it with the island/counter in front of it which will clutter up the view somewhat. The plain backslplash will be easier to keep clean also.

you could always do the layout like this for something diff

some people do a little framed section (yours would be in white of course)

personally I like the larger tiles in this layout. looks so much better than a standard 3x6 in a regular offset.

if you want something a bit diff, look into natural glazed ceramics in cream tones (you'll get just a slight variation like they do w/this green) in the 4x4 offset

same set up you have. these tiles are 2x6 or 2x8,, no accent over the stove.

I agree with just plain tile to the ceiling unless you have a wider taller space. in my own kitchen I thought it ended up looking plain/cold so i leaned a wood cutting board and server behind the stove :)

I did a different pattern, same color. I think it’s nice to have something subtle over the range/cooktop for visual interest.

Yet another vote for the same tile--it's simple and looks sophisticated in its simplicity.

We are going to do the basic running bond (First picture in right column), but behind the range, we are going to do a 30" square variation (4th picture down in left column). We aren't even using any boarder tile to set it apart, just changing directions for a short run. We have almost the same set up as you on the stove wall, with the 30" range, 36" hood, and the gap between the wall cabs and the hood.

A feature treatment behind the cooking surface is not as in-style as it once was. Making it all the same will never go out of style.
