I'm wondering if the ones that grew to 3-4" and then died needed more nutrients. How old were they when they reached that height? They probably needed to be fertilized and maybe moved into individual pots of soil.

Flora, thank you for the info! Bulbils! Well I'm sure glad that they'll be clones! I've only seen these structures on the plants. How and where are seeds actually formed?

Bruce, that's possible! They were about a month or so old, maybe two months. Once the majority of these seedlings have their leaves up, I'll begin lightly fertilizing. I'm glad to see that they're coming along nicely so far.

What about vernalising them. ie put them in the fridge for 2 months, 3 months if Orientals, to simulate winter. Or longer to bring them into spring if not growing under lights. There is a good website called Pacific Bulbs Germination

Well, two months later and this project is just coming along wonderfully!
I don't want to jinx myself, but I'm very happy with the progress. I guess the next thing to begin planning is how I'm going to separate / upsize these seedlings in containers?
