Help Fireplace Room

I am struggling with what I need to do to finish this room. I am open to wall paint colors, getting rid of furniture, moving furniture, painting the mantel, hesitating on painting the brick. I will throw out items, replace or refinish. The love seat couch is probably going to go. I am hoping not to have a complete overhaul but keep as much as I can. Any help! Thank you

I would even paint the cabinet.

What is the room primarily used for? Watching TV? Sitting? Entertaining?

I use it to relax, sit in and use the fireplace. Reading books or sleeping on the couch at the end of the day. I could put a tv in there but the mantel is pretty high, so mostly to relax. Coffee/wine.

My only suggestion would be to swap the loveseat for a smaller comfy chair. Remove the plant or move it and put an end table and lamp that the couch and chair can share. Your colors are very fun and the brick and cabinet work as is.

I would replace the panels with white to match the color of the walls. Suggest panels with grommets so you can open and close them easily. My eye is drawn to the what you have there now and it just seems very heavy and dated. I like your art collection!

Thank you for both of your input. I will so both and update with more pictures.

A few things come to mind. First, a rug that is larger and will fit the legs of your sofa would be ideal. I would replace the loveseat for a light-weight accent chair. I say light-weight because it looks like there is a sliding door behind it? I would omit the cabinet and either just have artwork on that wall, or perhaps an open etagere with some display pieces.

Find a color pallet that is relaxing to you. If you only want an overhead light replace the switch with a dimmer switch. Add small end tables or one, with a reading lamp with a 3 way light bulb. Make sure your lighting is "soft" or "warm" .

I'd like to suggest that the wall color be changed to something a little warmer. It could be my monitor and/or the lighting you have, but it looks rather cold - especially with the warm and vibrant colors in your art. Do you know the current color?

I can see this room being sort of a cocoon for you. Since you're open to changing up the furniture as well as the paint color, consider the below which features vibrant art similar to yours and an ultra-luxe sofa in a luscious color for lounging! Everything is neutral except the art and sofa. I think it's a good balance.

The ottomans you have would be a relatively easy DIY recover if you're inclined.

    Oops! Forgot the ceiling light!

I agree with Manon that the wall color is a bit stark. Also, it adds an extra color to the room when you already have a pretty eye-catching palette. My thought was to paint the wall a color close to the color of your sofa, maybe a bit lighter. Your room seems cozy and I think a darker color would enhance that rather than feeling closed in.

First of all, nice work so far. But you feel something isnt quite there and I agree. The feeling I am getting is too impersonal and matchy, like a hotel room where everything is bought together at once. I get the sense that even the art is part of the color scheme even if that isn't the case. With the exception of the interesting mantle pieces and art, I don't feel like there is a lot of you in the room. Although I don't personally like grommets, I agree that changing out the curtains to a color that matches the walls would be great. Total length of fabric not less than 2.5x the width of the doors. I would remove all fake flowers and plants. I would slowly replace the ceramics and stools that scream "color scheme!" With items that you are drawn to for whatever reason, that come from your travels, friends, etc.

i would eventually want a larger rug that goes under the furniture and down pillows thAt sit up nice and fat, and I would want fabulous patterns on some of the pillows.

...and I agree I would look at pale taupes for paint...

We agree that the paint color and lighting seem to be a bit off here. We like the idea of creating a more relaxed vibe for you since you only drink wine and read here. Why not try some nice neutral colors? If you want to do some browns, greens, and blues that might be lovely.

Thank you! The love seat just left the building! So have the fake flowers and statutes on the mantel. Today, I will be looking at paint colors. I love the suggestion to have a bold colored couch. This room is definitely my cocoon- as it is the only room that I truly use as my own. The rest of the rooms seem to be taken up by very beautiful 2 year old daughter's toys and books. I told myself, this holiday, the room will become my haven. All of the suggestions have been amazing, and, I agree with all of them especially with the paint color suggestions. The sample ideas have are also very helpful. Thank you!

IMO the room thus far doesn't look relaxing, but a team room or the Chicago Bears. Help it by never turning on the overhead light and adding table and floor lamps for the room.

Because my design opinion was that the blue and orange looked like a team room? Maybe the owners are Chgo Bear fans and that was their intent.

People post on this forum because they are looking for feedback, ideas or solutions. You may not share my opinion, but it's an opinion, not a personal attack. Chill.
