If you've never grafted before google whip and tongue graft. I did it last spring for the first time and all 7 grafts took and grew. I'm assuming you might not find another source and these are there waiting for someone who appreciates them.

That looks like a nice red apple. It's very vigorous and bears at an early age.

You'll get two scions with any order, for the same price. Sometimes they're 8" and I've seen 18" ers. But you can get at least 4 trees from what they ship. The shipping charge for the rootstocks will be the same if you order 4 rootstocks or just the one. So the price'd be pretty cheap for each tree if you're doing say 4, or even two. You need to explain your study, which in this case could be "studying legacy apple trees. Will report the results on my blog". The results of growing apple trees take years........
