Is it possible to turn the table so it runs the other way? I may be wrong but based on the picture it looks like there isn't much space to walk around the table to get to the chairs and buffet? Dimensions would really help if you would like to provide. As is, I would do some colorful art on the wall above the buffet that picks up your wall color and the chair slipcover colors (is that green?) and matching lamps (not black).

If it were my dining room I would probably reorient the table, move the buffet to one side wall (if there is room, if not I'd remove a leaf from the table and put the extra chairs on the side). Over the buffet I'd probably do mirror and lamps and then on the opposite wall some art in similar scale to mirror. I'd also either replace or recover the two end chairs with something with more pattern/color to tie in the art. Then on the wall buffet is on probably a grouping of art or maybe family photos. I'd probably go with a more colorful rug too.

Its hard to tell colors from the picture but I bet introducing some navy or another color will be very pretty.

This is of course my opinion I think its a lovely dining room and an excellent base for decorating!

You really need color and the best choice for that is art. A much nice light fixture anf hung lower and I would probably paint the room a different color. I find the slip covers really sloppy looking waht is underneath them?The odd chair does not make sense and that spindly lamp is just plain bad. I really dislike mirrors in DRs since no one I know wants to see themselves eating . Your rug is too small and IMO the room can’t handle one of the proper size. I would not do head of table different chairs because you really do not have the space so all 8 chairs the same.

Go through dining room photos on Houzz and save the ones you love the most. Choose one to copy.

Your rug is too small. It should be 4' wider and longer than the table. If you keep the table in this orientation, I would eliminate the rug altogether since a properly-sized rug will run into the walls. I would try turning the table 90° to see if it fits.

I'm not a pro, but it is fun to play around with other people's rooms :) Lamps and mirrors are fine, of course, but have you considered art and wall sconces? Here are some ideas for you, and merry Christmas :)

I like knowing what the nearby area is like, so is the kitchen full of features that you like, or is it on the unadorned, plain side? if a body space, maybe a very large canvas art on end wall, or wallpaper.

Don't put a mirror over that buffet or you'll be staring at yourself from the kitchen counter! Yes, reorient table and start looking for art in subjects and a palette you like. Pick art pieces that really fill the wall and create a mood. You can do two complementary art works. If you must have a mirror, get a nice old one--horizontal--that will reflect an art work across the way on the side walls.

Don't rush. For Christmas, just get a great, live centerpiece or make a towering one of fruit and green and call it done.

Window effect at the far wall or other landscapes that give you a look "outiside."

I have a set of 4 botanicals so I can play around with those! I am also pulling out the rug ASAP. I love computers - thank you for taking the time to make those designs! It helped so much. And Deb - I needed that reminder to not try to finish it before Christmas!!

imo, with several chairs, dont busy it up with several wall pieces. in a modern way, I'd do the decor big.

@deb I agree with you. Thank you. I’m going to look for a large pair of bluish complimentary canvases. A question to all: when I reorient the table, it it sticks out into the main room out of the dining room, that means it won’t work right?

Some suggestions to finish your room. The chandelier seems too small scale for this room so I have changed it to a linear lantern.

If the table sticks out of the dining room when you turn it, then yes it won't work. If it's close, try removing the head chairs. But yes, keep table and chairs contained in the dining area.

I see Beverly replaced your chandelier because she thinks yours is too small. I'm replacing it because I like this one better.

Here is some dining room inspiration for you. Why not try a new chandelier and perhaps a piece of artwork on top of the buffet?

Hi all! I wanted to provide an update on the space! I took all of your recs. It is a work in progress! I had this antique piece on the left in the garage! I will find a dressier/more formal mirror and a better lamp situation! And we still need a new chandelier/light fixture. I really want a rug. But like some others said, I don’t think there is a right size to fit in the space!
