It largely depends on two things: the "pattern" of the countertop material and the skill of the fabricator in "laminating" the two slabs of material together. And quite frankly, the later may be the most important. Ask your fabricator to see samples of double-thick tops and even ask him to mock up a 12x12 sample in the material that you have selected.
