I am in the same quandary, and I think I will probably go with a simple honeycomb blind. Maybe top-down/bottom-up, as I don't have a nice view out my window either. I love how you can let light in at the top but still have privacy and not have to look at the "view."

I like the above suggestion as the general type of covering to look for. You want something that will allow light in during the day, but will also provide privacy as needed from the window opposite. Depending on the amount of the 10 feet between houses is yours, you may be able to plant something narrow that will give you something more pleasant to look at close in, either planted in a large window box or tall, narrow plants in the ground.

Even WalMart has the new mini blinds w/o strings. Over the kitchen sink, you can likely expect only adults or older children --those old enough that can understand the both what an why clean hands are needed to open/close them -- to be able to reach them; important because: if someone is pushing/pulling the blinds up/down w/hands that are not clean, it will eventually become evident.

Surprised to not see the faux wood blinds recommended. Can of course get top of the line but I have used the faux ones in white and it allows privacy AND light control, and no worries about getting water or grease on them as they are pretty much scrubbable.Here is an example from JCP but they are everywhere

KJ, we have a similar kitchen window. My kitchen is in the front so it looks out onto the front porch which means it is easy for people to walk up the steps and over to the window and look in. I want the light so my blinds stay open during the day while we are home but I had to have something to block at night and when we are not here. I have faux wood blinds (either from Lowes or Home Depot, can't remember) Love them because I can quickly clean any splashes. The curtain is a faux roman shade I found at Target. I could not mount inside the window trim but am still happy with the result. Hope this helps.

By using off white blinds -- vinyl or faux wood to withstand the moisture of the kitchen -- the same as or similar to the color as your cabinets, the blinds will all but disappear visually, enabling the emphasis to be on the light entering the room there rather than the window treatment. Adding blinds or shades of any other color tends to emphasis the small size of the average kitchen window.

If you are looking out your window at the window of your neighbor, you might consider adding a either a pair of posts w/lattice in between -- or three posts to create a free standing angle w/triangle planter as their weighted base.

Alternately, you might consider a rectangular treated wood planter box w/lattice:

It helps if you can find a pair of 4' plastic rectangle shaped planters and then build your box around them with your lattice over the box and in between the planters rather than need to line the wood box w/thick plastic. Adding either treated wood feet or even wheels to your planter will make it more mobile.

Depending upon your planting zone, something like English Ivy in your planters could soon provide year round privacy. English Ivy is invasive so you might not want to plant it directly into the soil of your yard.
