Interesting! Show what I know lol.

Cherry fruits don't hang around late into the year like this.

Pretty sure a flowering crab. Considered a ornamental tree many varieties, white, pink or deep pink/red flowers. The small fruit stays on all winter and birds love them. Not the same as a true crab apple tree with small apples 3-4 inches in diameter.

There is no "true crab apple tree" - all Malus with less than orchard apple sized fruits are crab apples.

Yes, there's no such thing as a 'true crab apple'. And not all crabs retain their fruit through winter. On some it drops, on some it remains in good condition and on some it shrivels and rots but remains hanging on the tree. Some crabs hold fruit singly, some in bunches, some on long stalks, some on short. But they're all crab apples. Btw the id is more than 'pretty sure', it's definite.

Ok since this one can't be pinned down what are some cultivars that would have similar characteristics as this?

It wouldn't be sensible for me to suggest anything because I live in a totally different climate. How about taking your photograph to local nurseries and botanical gardens/parks and getting some ideas for something similar that will grow well locally? In fact why not ask the people at the ecology garden what they planted? It should have had a name when they bought it.

==>>> all of them ... i guess i dont quite get the question ...

you should choose C's based on disease resistance ... as well as proclivity to sucker if that is a marketable trait ...

also.. in this pic.. you cant see leaf color ... those vary also ...

you ought to see if there is a labeled collection near you ... one arb near me.. has a collection of about 50 different named varieties ... though i doubt most are commercially available ...

my fave is Autumn gold .... pic below ... yellow leafed.. white flowered .. and yellow fruit ... until late winter.. when the robins come back to town.. and eat the fermented fruit.. and start flying into windows ... lol

i cant find my pic.. whats that all about ... heres a link

Like elms and willows crabs often need to be seen at more than one time of the year to be named, when not already familiar. (For instance when in flower, in addition to when in fruit). With there being more than one kind of crab that has small red fruits that last into winter.

but.. that said ... the number of plants commercially available are rather low ... many of those found in botanical collections simply wont be found on todays market ...

i mail ordered a collection decades ago ... and basically ... it was the green leaf/red flower ... the green/pink ... the red leaf/red flower ... and the green leaf white flowered ... later i got the yellow leaf/yellow fruit version at a nursery ...

i think prairiefire is highly resistant .. and commonly available:

flip to the IMAGES side at the link ...

check this out.. under each box of disease.. is suggestions on those resistant ...

https://extension.psu.edu/crabapple-diseases

and just to be clear.. if you buy one with resistance .. they are rather carefree trees ... and oh what a spring show ... lifes to short to go without at least one ... if you have the space ...

I was thinking in terms of what might be found on the market - more than one named cultivar that covers itself with persistent red pellets has been circulated.
