@dadoes the repair guy i had come said it would be $500 to replace the pump and the washer is getting to the end of its life…so that repair doesn‘t make much sense vs replacing the unit. but now this height dilemma!

Well since all of you "in" shape Americans kept complaining that the doors on the 36" high units were too low and you couldn't reach them , the manufacturers bowed to your wishes (and waist line) and raised them. This meant that the units had to be higher. If you were smart enough to Not put a counter over the units then replacement isn't a problem. If however you you put a counter tight to the top of your old units, you're going to be in need of a carpenter.

36" high units were a fantastic idea, they stacked well and the dryer controls were at a good height, Top was at a good working height as well. As the old adage says "Be careful whet you wish for!".

I.e fits under a standard counter but is still large capacity?

You just blew my mind. I'm glad i found this discussion. I went and measured our current (12 yr old) laundry setup, which is similar to yours, lightlystarched. We're in the same situation. I love my folding counter above my 2 front loaders. Our sink and lower cupboards at the end will not allow for the counter to be raised easily. I guess that when we go to sell our house in a few years, we will have to sell the current WD combo with it and buy new ones for our new house. Disappointing.

Same issue for us: the 36" tall washer, 4.1 cu ft, that we bought 10 years ago, died yesterday, and I'm having a HARD time finding a washer that fits in the same space when you lift the lid! The cabinets are 53 1/2" floor to cabinet bottom, and not much fits under them. Not happy.

Wow, same here. Have a 4 yr old Electrolux stackable unit, dryer is now leaving brown crusty streaks on clothes. Internet research shows this is a design flaw with the unit - so DON'T BUY ELECTROLUX DRYERS. But now we can't locate a new dryer, from any brand with similar capacity to fit into the closet we designed for the stackable washer/dryer. I didn't love the tone of the post from @anon anon, but I have to agree with him. This is likely consumer driven.

Might not be your dryer!!! Do you use softener sheets? If so that garbage leaves wax in your clothes every time you use them. This eventually builds up in your clothes and ruins them. Try ironing a garment that's been through your dryer a few dozen times and notice the brown crud on the bottom of your iron, that's the wax coming out of your clothes.

Lost count of the fridges that died because of only 3/16" clearance around them, and they cooked themselves to death.

You might want to look at the new LG WashTowers. They are only 74 1/2" tall. Slather the top with enough Crisco and one of these units just might fit.

So far my proposal for a Law that requires Architects and "Interior Designers" to take a job moving furniture and appliances for at least a year has fallen on deaf ears.

Add us to the list of consumers with this problem. We have gone through two Frigidaire Affinity washers (36" high) and can no longer find a replacement. Repair costs are really high and have proven not to last--yet we can't buy anything new that isn't a compact. (We have a space 72" high to attack the units. The Affinity Dryer is also 36") 😔

I have the same problem our washer and dryer are built into

Seems like that should be the case but, If any companies still do, this three-year long thread shows they don't offer any of them in the North American market. Three years ago when this thread began, nobody could find one in any stores and nobody could find one via Google, Bing, Duck-Duck, etc. Sandra Lespinasse confirms that is still the case.

The ones made for "mobil homes" --- don't we love auto correct! --- and yachts are compact models, the largest of which are 24 inches wide and 33½ inches tall. Portable models are mostly even smaller.

The Electrolux ELFW7637AW is 38" tall which appears to be as short as you're going to get in a full-size washer. For comparison, LG front-load washers are 39". The LG WKE100HWA Washtower is 74-3/8" tall; dividing by two, the average appliance height is 37-3/16" plus no additional space would be required for stacking.

Decided to lift the counter (above the washer & dryer) about 5 inches higher to accomadate taller units.

If I raised my counter by 5” I would need a much taller step stool than I currently have. I’m 5’4” with short legs. When we sell our home we will have to sell it (in a few years) with the W/D we currently own. I will have to adjust to a new W/D set. I am the chief laundry person in our household.

This is not what I wanted to see when searching for a 36" tall dryer. We too have a custom countertop above our Duet Sport washer and dryer. I'd be game to raise it, but then the washer (which works fine) and dryer would not match. I'm going to try to find a used one to buy. Disappointing there are no new options!!

Yes it does. By standardizing height, manufacturers can make more products with other characteristics and purchasers can know that many products will be available at the standard size.

As wdccruise posted, standardized height is good and less expensive. (Just ask Henry Ford)

As for the demise of 36" products, you'll have to look back to my previous posts.

Now if Customers and idiot "Designers" would (God forbid) ASK questions of we the people that sell appliances, you would have heard an almost unanimous DON'T DO IT!

36" laundry is gone forever! If you need something short, you'll have to buy 24" European size laundry at 34" high.

As I neglected to mention in my earlier post, tall washers are not just a problem if you have a counter over the washer. The clearance of wall cabinets could restrict the lid from fully opening. We raised our cabinets, and now it requires a step stool or ladder to reach the most of contents of the cabinet.

That's partly because I made the mistake of buying a 5 cubic foot washer and matching dryer. The bigger dryer needs a wider vent hose, which means it has to be pulled farther out from the wall, and in our tiny laundry room, there's not much room for the washer/dryer AND the hampers AND to put down a ladder. The house came with the short washer/dryer set.

All dryers I've seen since the 1960s take a standard 4"-diameter exhaust duct. A larger-capacity unit (both washers and dryers) may be deeper and thus protrude further from the rear wall.

And the devil to whomever might be disabled with the higher units, but the lower than usual tubs, washers, dryers, and dishwashers also. They have ALL been lowered in recent years, making getting items out of these units much more difficult for the disabled, the elderly, and those with back problems. Yet, they even made extensions that fits on bottom of some units, to raise them even higher! There should have been someone more knowledgeable, not only with cabintry intelligence, but also to those who allowed so many changes in the manufacure of such units! What I guess what I'm saying, is when did we all get so short, and need the tubs of these units so much lower to the ground? And need to tops to be higher? They could have sent out 'mailers' like a survey or something, couldn't they?

What? First you complain that the washers are too low and then you complain that pedestals are available to raise them up!

Here we are in 2025, and sadly still no counter height washer and dryers (36 inches) available on the market. I have a custom finished laundry room that I love that has a countertop over the appliances. My only solution is to go with compact units. Beware of the non vented compact dryers with heatpumps; they have a very long 2 hour dry time!! Found only one compact dryer that vents. Not happy with my choices. Going with a compact vented dryer & washer option. The alternative of rebuilding my laundry room is far too costly!

I have an issue with the taller 38" washers and dryers; It sucks; I have a beatifull built in folding utility counter and cabinet with a sink in a clean room area. I love it!! But!! The appliances need replacing and there is none available that will fit under the counter. It really pisses me!!

Well!! I just posted my frustrations with the new taller appliances; but because of my clean room set up I'm keeping my old machines working!! . People!! Find you self a handy mechanical friend and fix the old ones like new. Parts are available!! I changed the inlet hot and cold water valves; changed out the discharge water pump and cleaned the crud out of the hoses. Cleaned the machine inside door rubber seal very well with CLR and tapped it hard all around with my hand to make sure if is free to move and seal to the metal frame so it don't leak water. Mine was a bit and that fixed that part. The circuit board power on and start buttons were also an issue. I repaired the broken console cover button ingagers with apoxy and clean the circuit board switches with rubbing alocohol on a cue tip and air; changed the shocks to stop the extreme shaking; put it all back togehter; did a trial wash with the CLR mix and it works great and should do me until I don't need to wash my own clothes anymore; I'm 80 HAHAHa. "They" (Frigidaire/Electrolux) stopped making 36" high front load washing machines a decade ago. Answer hasn't changed over the six years this thread has been running. Note the confiming post above by pauline6 from three weeks ago and the one from Anon Anon from last year.

I am eternally grateful to Grayson (HU-7293545280) I called a repair person for my 30-year old 35x27 under-counter washer. It cost me $350.00 to repair and I am DELIGHTED. I searched and searched for a new washer to match my size (under-counter) and capacity (4 cu ft) needs and could not find one. I saved $1100.00 by not buying a new Bosch that was going to be much smaller than my needs. It is Saturday evening and the repair person just left. I am raising a glass of Sauv blanc to Grayson for helping me to realize repairing, while not cheap, was the best option.

I should have just repaired mine as well. I think my old Kenmore did a better job washing my clothes.

I am in the same boat! I have 13-year-old Maytag stackable washer and dryer. I live in a condo with a tiny laundry closet and they fit perfectly. I also need 36-inch high units that cannot be deeper than 30 inches. I am so upset they stopped making these. I guess I will try to get both repaired. I have had repairs done in the past. My washer is leaking a bit; I think it is the drain pump. And the dryer only has cold air now, no heat.

i started to look ahead for a w+d and found this thread. i have kenmore series 80 w+d and they are 33 years old. yesterday the washer motor got hot and stopped. i checked everything and waited and it's running again ... 3 loads completed. over the years i've replaced many parts and even patched some bad cabinet spots. the pump is easy to do. the motor not much worse. i had a bad motor wire connection that i remade years ago. i've replaced a bearing and even the tub itself. i replaced the water height fill switch and the inlet valves. today i plastic welded new 'nubs' onto the water fill nozzle bracket since it gets beat up every time i take off the cabinet. reinstalling the cabinet properly may be the toughest job ... and sometimes it goes like silk. fortunately a neighbor had many old appliances in his yard for some parts! i will make the repairs as long as i can. yes 36"!

Just found this thread after searching for a replacement for 36" H, 3.6cu ft 19 year old Kenmore washer and dryer. Like you all I am frustrated at not being able to reach the counter if we place it above a 39" full size front loader. I'm 5'2", elbow height is 38" which means I'll be reaching up if I raise the counter and won't be comfortable to fold or work on it. Hate to be sexist or biased but wonder if any women were in on the decision making to change the heights? They only way they'll bring back the height that works is if people stop purchasing the taller models-which I might. I'm now inspired to search for a repair person who can keep this machine going for another 10 years. . . fingers crossed! thank you all for the great information

I'm with you all. . . very frustrated that the new machines are all 39"+ tall and won't fit under a countertop. Hate to raise the counter as I won't be able to reach or use without a stool. Medium size drum is all I need in a 36" H, 3.5 cu ft washer. I'm now on a mission to find a good, old fashioned repair person to keep my machines running and replace the counter with same height. . . All good information-Hope the feedback (and alternative to purchase new/tall machines) helps to correct the market. Sounds like there are more than a few looking for 36"-old style machines!
