I have a 7.5x16 foot garage door. it is a double torsion spring system. Visually, all of the springs and cables look good. My door was working perfectly until the cables came off the drum on both sides. I should have reworked the cables while the door was in the upright position but I manage to lower the door. Once down rewound the drums on both sides and made sure that there were no obstructions. I have a lot of tension in the cables but when I try to lift the door manually it won't budge. When I tried using the the electric opener initially the door did not budge but the shaft that runs from the electric opener to the door bowed away from the ceiling and the system stop. I tried this a couple of times and got the same result. It appeared to me like the spring shaft started turning before the drums such that the cable barrels were not engaging quickly enough to lift the door.

After watching several videos online, I used winding bars to turn the portion springs gradually up to 3 or 4 full revolutions. I did not loosen the portion springs from the shaft, rather just turned the springs tighter. I reworked the cables which now have a high degree of tension. Again the door would not budge manually. However, when i tried to raise the door with the electric opener the door raised about six inches before the the opener shaft bowed away from the ceiling again and stopped automatically. The bowing was less dramatic than the prior times. Logic tells me that twisting the torsion spring shaft was a step in the right direction but the last turn was extremely tight and given the dangers that I've read about, I wanted to seek some advice before going in further. My question is am I on the right track? Should I just keep winding the shaft until the door eventually lifts or should I just unwind the springs and rewind them?
