Help With Kitchen Ideas...

last modified: 7 years ago

Would love any input on appliance placement, trash, and any other advice. Specs on pic are not totally accurate (I.e., he shows 1 dishwasher, we are doing two). Island is 10’ long for reference.

New construction. We have a 2nd smaller sink/beverage counter. If we do dishwashers flanking the island sink, I worry about convenient trash placement. Also doing 36” cooktop... is a 30” oven below the cooktop awkward? I do not want a range. Also having a second oven/microwave. Thank you!!

So we need pictures or a plan . I see no point in having a 30” wall oven below a 36” cooktop a range is amuch better choice.I also see no point in 2 MWs I love 2 DWs if they make sense all the time for your lifestyle. If you could post a bit more info it would also help and a destailed floor is always good.

    Random thoughts:

    - We need to see your layout.

    - How would you describe your cooking style? Fresh vegetables or canned goods? Baking? What small appliances pop out frequently? Any special needs?

    - Ideally your refrigerator and pantry will be nearest the family entrance ... and the cooking areas closer to the dining room. Think about food coming in the door and moving in a straight, efficient line to the table.

    - Think logically about the things you want near one another; for example, you want your dishwasher to be near the cabinet for everyday glassware and also near the refrigerator.

    - You're talking about a lot of repetitive items. Remember that every time you say "yes" to a duplicate this or that, you're saying "no" to storage and "yes" to a larger cabinet /countertop bill. Consider a modest-sized kitchen with a large attached pantry; pantries are very cheap, and they allow you to see everything at a glance.

    - Yes, a 30" oven below a 36" cooktop sounds awkward.

    - Don't neglect your range hood in this set-up.

    - How do you use your microwave? Do you cook in it, or is it just for warming things up? Could it go into the pantry?

    - I don't know what to say about trash, but don't neglect recycling ... it can take up more space than trash. Do consider the pathway between the kitchen trash and the outdoor cans.

    - You haven't asked about the most important appliance: the sink. Size? Standard, Ledge, Apron? Accessories? Disposal? Under a window? Do you want sharp knives, colanders or other items handy at the sink?

    - What small appliances do you want to keep plugged in all the time? Coffee maker? Toaster? Toaster oven? Ideally you'll keep these items outside the main cooking area.

    - Don't neglect lighting.

    - Do you intend to have a separate freezer?

    - How do you serve everyday meals? From the stove, on the island? What about when you have guests?

I tried to add the picture with original post twice which didn’t work, then tried adding to comments which didn’t work! Trying again here:

Could you just post a floor plan , what is the angled wall, a stove and sink should never be across from eachother , The fridge is not close enough to the sink. A fridge is best when placed at the end of a run of cabinets and near the main walkway from the family room. Put a prep sink in the coffee bar area you will need trash there and near the DWs. What you need is a good KD not a cabinet salesperson .I much prefer a wall oven to be mounted in a wall since it makes it much more comfortable to use.I spend a huge amount of time with my clients finding out how they cook, what they cook. How many people cook , how many people live there . Post the whole main floor not just the kitchen, where is the pantry since a house that needs 2 DWs needs also a ton of storage
