Rug with wall

Hi! Thank you. The china cabinet in the corner has been an issue since we got it as a wedding gift. It has never fit in any house we have had and I don't know where else to put it! I don't dislike blue, maybe it is the color I have which I can't remember. Dark rugs just bring me down! We also have a 4 year old so the leather ottoman is useful. I may not be opposed to painting the built ins. What do you suggest?

The darker small pieces are good accents, but the ottoman could use some thought, as well as the lamps.

Thoughts on this direction/ colours so far?

Rug isn't my style, maybe it's too modern? The house is a 1940 brick cape cod. I don't know my style! Thanks for the help.

Maybe too brown...not always a potter barn fan, but what about this? Oh and this is assuming I can talk my husband into a new rug since it was his grandmothers!

Both the rug and the ottoman are traditional in style, but current. They include enough different tones of blue to allow a repainting of the room in a new shade without worry, should you decide to. By changing those two items ( in a cool shade, to keep the room feeling more open), you will have other colors to work from for pillows and additional accessories, no matter what style you choose. I think your ceiling is fine as is, but should you paint again, select from the new carpet and make a test board first.
I suggest editing some of the photos and gathering them more together, so they make more of a statement. There are so many now that none gain attention. If lightening the mirror is an option that will help,too.

Yes to your rug choice! Nix to the ottoman with it! But you get the idea, if not the exact item!

Thinking a paint change may be better than a rug change for my marriage! Not really but I may be more successful with that although I still think the rug is too dark.

I think your current rug is lovely. Great colors in it. (There's a color on my monitor that looks like peach or light orange which you might pick up for pillows). Maybe if you could switch out the very large dark ottoman for a glass coffee table the room would take on new life. And possibly change out white wood blinds for short Roman blinds that would be kept raised most of the time.` And some lovely curtain panels hung next to each window. Just two cents of thought this rainy day!
