How often do you use the wood burning fireplace in your office?

We have never used the fireplace. We looked into converting it to gas so we'd use it more often. But the firebox is so small that we'd be limited to few choices for gas logs. And extending gas to the fireplace would be costly and disruptive to the house (lots of drywall repair).

So, we decided to just make it look prettier.

@acm, could you share any ideas as to what tile to use? And what to do with the hearth? I really like the idea of simple. I just can't seem to envision a good look for a potential tile re-do.

What’s your style? I would tile the front, going all the way to the edge instead of the smaller frame you currently have. I wouldn’t tile or brick around the sides. You could either tile up to a mantel or tile all the way up to the ceiling if you had a more simple tile. I would go with a simple mantel straight across.

You could replace the current tile with something more interesting and wrap the tile area around to the wall on both sides. Hang a larger piece of art.

Since it is never used and gas would be too costly to install, you might just put some Luminara candles in an arrangement inside it. I am partial to the stone look but if you are more modern, maybe new tile. If you can, remove the tile on the floor since you don’t need it, and extend your wood floor in that space. Or put a pretty rug over the floor tiles to be more cost efficient. Add a mantle to put some special items on and art on the wall over it. Very pleasant office.
