can you flip the chairs with the couch and use the console table behind the couch? I would do 2 smaller lamps instead of one big one

Why don't you turn the couch to face the other window and place one chair on either side of the couch. Then you can put some taller plants on one side and some throw pillows on the other. The chairs need color, I would place a pillow of a bright color on each chair and have a couple pillows on the sofa that draw the colors to it

I get torn when I see pictures like this because I don't know what I'm supposed to say. This is a living room of an older person who is going for comfort, and that's great, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. My advice is don't worry about anything and just be comfortable and make your space clean and livable for you. Having said that, this is a site full of interior designers, my passion is trying to make a room look like it should be in a magazine. So again, I don't know what to say here. I guess I will say .... at least fold up your lap blankets or neatly "throw" them over an arm. If it's not already, have your couch face your TV. And unless that little console table is in the entry way, hang art work over it instead of a mirror. Other than that, relax and enjoy your life.

I think we tend to over-analyze ourselves sometimes. The room looks nice and comfortable. What’s to complain? The only thing I’d recommend is centring the Victoria on that section of wall, instead of backing it right into the corner as appears to have been done.

Debra, Your suggestion is the way I had the table and couch before I got two dogs. They would get on the back of the couch with front paws on table to look out the window. Needless to say, my beautiful table has several small scratches. Then I moved it:)

I think your console is a bit “crowded” in comparison to the rest of the room. Your room is serene, but the visual “activity” around the mirror is drawing the eye to that space. Try removing the vase and small figure, and move the lamp slightly to the left. Try the larger figure (weathervane) from the other corner on the open console space. Perhaps the flowers would work on the old victrola. Experiment and have fun!

What is the focal point in this room? TV? Fireplace? Artwork?

Unless you’re actually going to use the lamp on the console think about removing it.

If you are keeping the lamp on the console table. I would use some command hooks hidden behind the table so that the cord runs straight down to the plug, neatly.

You have gotten some really good suggestions from the previous comments. I especially liked the idea of the console behind the couch, centering the victrola, and colorful pillows, but I understand your dog issue with the table. One thing I do notice is the chairs and couch are really far from the round coffee table. What is the purpose of the table if no one can reach it? So I would move the furniture in a little to cozy it up. Also, are the chair covers for the dogs? It reminds me of a nursing home chair cover (sorry, but that is the first thing that came to mind). Also, the question about the focal point was really a good one. How is this room primarily used? The lamp and flower arrangement block the mirror. Too busy over there. How is it being used or is it just for looks. Post more pictures of the room from different angles. On a final note, if I walked into this room, I really wouldn’t think it looked bad or off. It can use some tweaking but that may be just personal taste.

@cpaul -- Jeesh -- then why even post? Just skip over this dilemma and move on to one that you feel you can help. There's no reason to diminish a poster's space.

Do you have a television to the right that you view or is this a sitting/conversation room? Perhaps, there is a better layout for the space.

You could move either the vase or the lamp that are located on the console and place it between the two chairs.

2shirlpp: you can see, barely off to the right, a fireplace hearth. That is what the seating seems centred upon.

I'm not sure if there's enough space, however, you could move the couch to face the fireplace and put a recliner on each side of the couch.

Our felines like to jump on top of wood furniture, so we had glass pieces made to cover the tops. This has prevented scratches. Maybe that is an idea for your table if you move it back behind the sofa. I understand the pet feet and furniture dilemma

Put a less delicate lamp on the console. Leave the rest of the top empty except when you have fresh flowers. Celebrate the Victrola.

shrrlpp, As you look at the photo, the TV is mounted on the wall on left and the fireplace is directly opposite it.

This is a very long and narrow room. I moved the couch and chairs farther from the coffee table so there wouldn't be so much empty space on each end of the room.

Gosh, it looks OK to me. Except I think you need to add another color. I see only blue & white (except for the red throw.) Something yellow or green? Multi color w/ pattern? Or replace the area rug with something that has more colors than just blue & white?

For sure artwork is needed on the mantle or mounted slightly above it. Another chair protection on the other chair would help unify them. I'd also consider removing the torchierre from near the fireplace.

Maybe remove the console table (to the left of Victrola) altogether. Then move the cabinet which is at the right hand side of the door - to where the Victrola is. Move the cabinet which is currently in the left hand side of the door over to the right hand side of the door, where previous cabinet was. Move Victrola to the left hand side of the door behind the couch....assuming the cabinets fit. Your room is nice ! Perhaps replace the big mirror (which is currently over the left hand console) with some artwork
