You certainly achieved your goal. Lovely room! I really don't find it's sorely lacking art and I wouldn't place anything above the headboard.

On third thought ;-), if forced, perhaps I could envisage drawings of some type. Honestly having difficulty imagining anything with much colour above your bed.

your bed frame would look great painted a glossy enamel in that blue accent color that you have.

I did a dresser for a customer in BM Pale Egg and it looked great.

Lovely space. Until you have finished the other side, I would wait on buying any art. But that just means you have time for looking and there is so much to look at, online and IRL. Are you familiar with Marilla Palmer (she is $$$ but many are working similarly...sometimes falling into too cutesyland,but not always) or Hennie Van de Lande or Nadia Attura or botanical plasterwork https://www.ronnicole.com/windflowerlookbook/ or a simple luminous landscape,maybe a watercolor or a Japanese print or two or an antiqued mirror along with a small oil painting on an easel on one of the nightstands or something from Natural Curiosities ........endless choices.

There is no decor law that says you absolutely must have something over your bed. You might not be a pro but you've created an utterly harmonious room with a lot of attention to detail so I'm confident you'll at least heed tatts' directive should you wish to add something. :)

What generalization houzzer-tatts posts. I just bought a Big Lots canvas of watercolor/spattered abstract plant. I have heard good comments, like my first feeling upon seeing its beautiful colors. In my life I have travelled and enjoyed nature. This isn't a personal photo, or from a town's art show or gallery. That doesn't matter to me; It doesn't have to be [any 1 way].

Nothing wrong either that at home we like how it looks on the fireplace. :)

I understand what you're expressing, everdebz, and I feel the same way. I have no aversion, per se, to decor store art - I have some in my own home - but I don't feel it suits this particular room.

I think the empty space above your headboard is lovely as is. But you could wallpaper it. For art, my amateur opinion never changes: Use only art you love; if you do that, it will "fit" because it's "you."

Do you have favorite artists? Exhibitions you attended and loved? Places you've been and remember fondly. Over my bed, sans a headboard because I don't like them, is an oversized canvas print of Nighthawks by American artist Edward Hopper. It's a painting I fell madly in love with the first time I saw it, and it gives me enormous pleasure seeing it multiple times per day. I also received permission and a high-quality digital copy of the original art for The Great Gatsby cover (the one with the eyes) and had that printed, again in an oversized print, and hung in the living room. Love it! And it works with everything else simply because of that one fact.

So don't look for art that makes the room look good; look for art you love! Trust me, it will work.

Mermaids or a statue of a lady would be nice, Sculptural art vs a painting.

Your bedroom is beautiful "as is" by the way but goodness how lucky are you to be able to place art above your bed. We have a huge window above our bed that I both like and dislike. Anyway, what do you like? The sky's the limit and it should be something you want to look at everyday upon going to bed and waking up. That is extremely personal, to me. If, however, you are just looking for something quick until you find what you really want a few "cheap pictures" (maybe 3-4 above your bed), or even "scroll art". Personally, I would make something. That would be fun. Just get a canvas or a piece of wood...and paint, "Sweet Dreams". You can have a huge canvas or one that says "Sweet" while the other says "Dreams".....really, whatever your favorite "saying" may be. Good luck :-)

I think if you want something above the bed it should be a set of 3-4 framed pieces. I found several but they are very pricey. But i will post a couple for “concept”. One idea I had, if you could do it, is get white shadow boxes. Then make or buy small objects to put inside or make various shapes of items using Origami techniques. Restoration Hardware has some beautiful pieces you might emulate. Keep it very simple and representative of things you love. No letters or sayings. I think you mentioned you don’t want that so I reinforce that thought.

I also love the room and could picture a really soft textured, lightly colored, or tone on tone wallpaper to highlight that wall.

I would wallpaper the wall behind the bed in a subtle very pale silvery gray blue paper and be done with it. No art. If you do want art, please try to buy from a local artist instead of a big box store.

Flo Mangan: Thank you very much for such a unique idea! LOVE it and not something I'd ever think of doing, but I do love getting crafty and this would be a great way to keep it in the same color scheme, but add some interest. This is why you're a pro! <3

For those who asked about colors: The room has a white ceiling, cream walls, white and cream bedding, and blue-gray (steel blue/stormy blue) accents. All of these colors are also in the rug.

My other ideas were as follows:

1. Paint chinoiserie panels (I paint, which is part of the reason I was primarily interested in color schemes - I could potentially make my own art). These panels would be made to have the look of handpainted wallpaper, in the colors of the room. They'd look something like this (photoshopped image, slightly color corrected from the first to show more accurate colors of the room):

Size could vary depending upon what looks best, I'd have to decide. I like the look of tall and narrow to mirror the windows on either side of the bed (you can see them more clearly in the before photo in my original post).

2. Antique mirrors... a series of maybe three, and I'd then paint abstract figures on them. I do a lot of work with charcoal and love the look of it, not sure how that would translate to working on a mirror... but it would be something like this on an antique mirror's surface (not my work, I don't have any uploaded to my computer but can do that later):

On a mirror's surface, it would look more transparent... and three different ones on three mirrors would look something like this (reflect the light/chandelier, too, which could make for an interesting effect):

3. Flo's shadow box idea! I'll have to photoshop that too, for a fair comparison of all 3. I think it would add a really nice 3D effect that isn't present in either of the other options. Plus, the hubby loves all things origami (he may actually get involved in making some!). Thank you again, Flo Mangan!

That's the kind of art that makes sense in your bedroom. I hope you'll share your room once it's done. I'm so curious about the wall across the bed. Trust your eye and taste to guide you - haven't failed you yet. :)

No signs and I would avoid cheap Chinese crap, as some call it. Were it me, I think I'd do a beautiful grasscloth or subtle wallpaper, maybe a classic trellis pattern. Honestly, though, I don't think you need anything. It's a gorgeous room. The only thing I'd be looking for is a reading lamp by that chair.

Maybe I'm just so used to staring at my room, that it seems to be missing something to me? Maybe what it really needs, is something on the entirely blank wall across the bed!

Here's the view from the bed:

The door to the left is the entrance into the room; the right part of it is open all day long, blocking about 1/3 of the wall, to about the light switch.

Door on the right is into the master bath.

Any thoughts as to what would work best here? Maybe a very narrow demilune console with art above it? Or just art?

I have a hard time with art without anything beneath it, over a blank space... never looks right to me (top heavy, maybe?)... I'm sure this is made up by me, and not an actual design principle, however.

That’s the wall i would put the painted antique mirror idea, which i love. Being antique mirrors you would get reflective quality but not too much. If tall enough it could be enough without a table.

Here is mock up and it shows subject matter will be important so you don’t have a Rorschach effect! Lol. But with tall mirrors, about size of normal dressing mirror.

Here is a great opportunity to get something you love. Go to your local community art galleries or on your next vacation go to to the local galleries. Find a piece that speaks to you. It will cost a little more but it will be timeless and you will love it. I got this in Folly Beach SC. It came framed and we love the marshes and Kayaking. It brings me joy. ( I have had it for 10 years, I never tire of it and it was maybe $400 framed. )

I’m not sure if you need anything over the bed, but the bedroom is a good place for figural art (life sketches, portraits).

What's on the wall to the right of the hallway? If it were my room, I'd want to take that whole expanse into consideration. (Potential for a mural? Your chinoiserie?) I'm a fan of big art though and could certainly see a canvas filling up that whole exposed left wall - ceiling to floor so to speak. Perhaps you'd like to try your hand at a huge piece there?

My aversion to dusting and my propensity to bumping into things mean I'm no fan of tables to fill space. That said, if I found a showpiece in an antique shop or the like, perhaps that wall would be the right spot for it. But it couldn't disturb the serenity achieved so far. So, tones, shape, etc. have to be in tune with the room. And what would I put on the table? A lamp? (Does the area need light?) A sculpture? Etc. Anything I'd consider would have to be very beautiful (or hold sentimental value) to merit a spot on the table (again, that darn dusting). I don't see the point of putting something on a wall simply because it's empty.

Keep mulling your ideas on the back burner and don't feel rushed to "finish" your personal space.

You have all given me some wonderful ideas, and I'll update this thread with the outcomes of them once I've figured out what feels right and where. If I get stuck, I'll be back for more help.

On thé wall across from the bed I picture a slim fireplace mantle with a mirror top.

In wouldn't put anything over your bed , it looks great the way it is . I don't see the other side , but perhaps a beautiful mirror . Art is a tricky thing ...you should love something in order to hang it on your walls ...it should have a meaning to you ...why not a wall of photos ...in lovely frames ..put together like a piece of art . Look at HOUZZ ideas ...then see what appeals to you best . You have a beautiful bedroom ...I would add a gorgeous mirror ...ornate frame or something unusual that fits your idea of romance ...have fun and go slow ..

Ahh sorry , I see your other side now ! YES ! Here THIS side is the problem ...how about a small table with an antique sort of chair and a make up mirror ..? Definitely a mirror ...! How lovely to have this much space ..or , a place for two to sit . . . ?The sky is the limit ..think of what YOU NEED here ..sit and relax or make up and / or store things...if you need to store more delicate clothes an armoire would be an idea to put there , some have a makeup mirror and room to store hair things , jewelry?? Ohh , so many wonderful options !
