Bareroot roll call

last modified: 7 years ago

i noticed the box stores in my area have their bareroot roses out. so far i’ve seen Zephrine drouphin and the common Popular hts and floribundas, though this year home depot had whiskey Mac and lowes had white Lightnin which I haven’t seen in recent years. I havent checked grocery outlet yet but they usually have thomas Lipton and a mix of older hybrid teas and climbers. What bareroots have you seen this season?

I cant wait to see if I can find Lavender Crush and Sheilas Perfume this year.

I'm so jealous all I see is snow, snow and more snow. The only way I can tell where my rose garden is the little poles I put in so I know where the miniature are located.

I just saw a huge rack full at Costco .. 2 for $15 . They were older varieties as usual but looked very healthy and large thick canes . So tempting even though I don’t need them !

I saw bare root Lavender Crush at Walmart in the past two years. I should have bought more Carefree Beauty at Walmart last summer, it's such a good landscaping rose. If I see it again this spring, I will plant 20-30 of them by the road. Sheilas Perfume, I got mine from the end of season bargain sale, 5 roses for $14.99 2 years ago, I bought 7 sets. A big snow storm is coming this weekend, so is the sub zero temp. I am thinking about which coat to wear, not which rose to buy tonight. :-)

Enjoy your bare root season down south!

Menards had really good-looking Carefree Beauty last year so if you have one nearby you might want to stop by and take a look-see at what they have. All of theirs made it through the summer at least. We'll see how things fare this winter.

Thanks vap, but we don’t have Menards close by,

I managed to find a fried Distant Drums at my local Lowes last year, in July. I baby'd it along, and got two flushes out of it with a ton of healthy new growth by the end of the season. I'm currently debating whether to hedge my bets and see if I can find another one this year, or to go ahead and order another couple own root, as I do love that rose. My sweet husband is the main chef in our household, so I try to plant the roses he likes in front of the kitchen window for him to see while he cooks. I feel like DD and Koko Loko don't show up in the Big Box stores very often.

That was a lucky find, Rachel. There were hardly any good roses at my local BB stores this past year. HD did get in a lot of the Canadian roses, but none that I had on my list. The only roses found were bareroot at Menard's and one Dbl.Pink Knock-out. Menard's has a surprisingly good selection of bare-roots, but they are often re-named for some reason. I have never seen either of your wants in this part of Ohio. It's lovely that you can see your roses from your kitchen. Mine's in the front and very shaded. I'm actually having the same dilemma and just went ahead and ordered another Cinco de Mayo OR.

Vap, I know you have been to the Park of Roses in Columbus, have you ever been to Oakland Nursery while you are up here? They style themselves as the largest carrier of roses in Ohio, and they do carry several thousand. Lots of Austins, Kordes, Star, Weeks, etc. They put out a rose list at the end of January each year, and they do take requests, I have messaged them via FB messenger. Worth a thought of checking out if you plan to go to the gardens again this year....

I have never heard of them! OMG! I remember asking where you live before, but forget. Is it Columbus? I visit the gardens at least once a year. Thank you!!! I', saving your post as a reminder. Too bad we can't all meet up sometime, but Ohio's a big state. : ((

I know!!! Wouldn't that be such a wonderful thing? To have a big meet-up somewhere? I do live in Columbus :) Well, in the Worthington/Linworth suburb, but still inside the outerbelt, so I consider that not to be the dreaded "burbs", haha! We do love Oakland though! I will keep watch over when they post their rose list, and let you know on here. They do seem to get some good ones(no KL or DD though) but they had stuff like Florentina and Eden, Neptune, Poseidon, Earth Angel, Twilight Zone, America, Mother of Pearl, Ebb Tide, PCDM, Violet's Pride, Boscobel, Evelyn, Abe, Carding Mill, QoS, Ancient Mariner, etc. Many of the Weeks that were "new" or what have you. It is a really huge nursery, and they have lots of cool events and classes. DH and I have gone to a Valentine's Day terrarium-making event before.

I just found "Trumpeter" at another Wal Mart...never seen that one before.

Grocery outlet and walmart haven’t got anything in yet. I wouldn’t mind finding medallion or lavender crush. I forget that tractor supply sells bareroots. I think my store didn’t offer any last year when I was looking for Paul neyron but they have in the past and I like that they sometimes few carry old garden roses and usually information on old garden roses

garden nut, that sounds like the same supplier of Menard's ...lots of the old roses, although many will just say pink rose or have some made-up name that one has to check against the Weeks' catalogue pictures. I didn't get PN last year and am kicking myself. They also had Buxom Beauty under some other name.

Grocery outlet finally had gotten some roses in though they looked like they either ordered less or they had already been gone through.they still had a good number of higher grade roses but they didn’t have any that looked that looked good in the varieties i wanted, so I ended up buying a 1 1/2 grade medallion.

I have bought 5 so far.......Tiffany, Gene Boerner, Fragrant Cloud, Comte de Chambourd and Chicago Peace. I do wonder about what growing fields they came from as have heard about the Weeks's one in California that had rose rosette disease.......hope I am not bringing it into my garden. Do any of you worry about that?

Most of the bareroots in my area usually come from Tyler Texas but the weeks issue is concerning since weeks is who many nursery’s in my area by from.

checked Walmart’s bareroots looking for lavender crush and they were mostly mid century hybrid teas They had gotten in kings ransom, jfk, garden party,Christian Dior, and tropicana.

Walmart near me had them outside before ice storm and frigid temps hit. I saw New Day, Arizona, Rio Samba, Gold Metal and I can't remember the rest.

After my first few years of rose gardening, buying just about every individual rose I could find from Lowes, HD or Walmart, I haven't found a bareroot there that I don't already have in years. But when I did, I found them to be big and healthy. The only issue I ever had was about 5% of them (VERY low) had RMV. Of those few, I only pulled one because it was bad, the others are still in the ground.

The folks at my local Lowes told me they will be getting a big shipment of roses in a week or two. I am hoping I can find Whisky Mac and Charisma. I need to stop by Tractor Supply and see if they have anything in yet. I know they get their roses from Certified.

Kristine you will love Sheilas Perfume...it's on my wishlist too since the one at my local botanical garden is always a favorite I rush to see each time I go. It's just beautiful and the the fragrance is always remarkable.

Royal Kate is an interesting rose.

    This is what I found:

    Hardiness Zone: 6

    Group/Class: Austin Rose

    Description:

An outstanding rose with rich, full, vibrant pink-violet flowers that compliment their namesake well; blooms all season long; all roses need full sun and well-drained soil ( Green Heaven garden center CA)

I think you scored!!! ) Hmmm. I can't find it on HMF or under "Plants bred" by D. Austin. I did find the floral trade Austin Kate. Was that the info on the bag? Except for the fact that it's a Floribunda, the tag photo reminds me of Belinda's Dream. Your picture, however reminds me of Buxom Beauty/Parole which I found last year as a mis-marked body bag at Menard's. Whatever it is it's a beauty! Yeah for getting a quick fix with bareroots!
