The Stagecoach Inn

In 1994, I designed a garden of historic roses for the Stagecoach Inn -- a historic site, located in Newbury Park, CA. It was a garden of roses which could have been there when the Inn was operating as a Stage STop and hotel in the late 1880's. And for a number of years, it was pretty nifty.

Of late years, the garden has fallen on bad times -- but they are now desirous of rehabilitating it, and have contacted me. I'm sort of excited.

The first step will be to go over there, and find out what is left ... what additions were inappropriate and will be removed ... and what else needs doing.

This is what it looked like, in 2006:

The Inn's main building just shows, beyond "Grandmother's Hat"

'Duchesse de Brabant', a birdbath, and a purple iris ... too good to skip.

I know some roses are gone. I wonder what remains.

    So beautiful!

Oh my goodness Jeri, that garden is absolutely beautiful! I love the roses together with the bearded iris.

I think it's really great that they want to renovate the garden!! People see to be getting more and more interested in roses again these days. I'm sure anyone visiting the inn will enjoy the rose garden as well.

How big is the garden? Do you know approx how many roses are there?

What fun you could have, Jeri, with the rejuvenation. It is beautiful.

Assuming that I had lots and lots of uncommitted time . . . .

Was 2006 the year I came down to see it, when Jim Delahanty was speaking? I was down your way visiting my daughter, and decided that I just had to see this famous garden. You were so kind as to give me the tour.

Jeri, you made a beautiful garden there. It will be fun bringing it back to it's former beauty.

comtesse has a good idea for getting some help with the heavy work. You can just oversee and give direction.

Comtesse is correct. There's a need for long-term care.

The good news is that the place is getting a grant, which will help with care and training.

The most immediate need is a decent pruning, the removal of some gawdawful wooden pole "teepees", removal of a few unsuccessful or inappropriate plants, and addition of a few replacements. Oh, and some replacement signage.

Sad news is that my former ARS rose society has disassociated itself from the project (ANY projects).

GOOD news is that some wonderful folks are already offering to assist. And that I can obtain a few crucial plants here and there.

The wonderful Sacramento City Cemetery's Historic Rose Garden is going to help with a few things!

Some lucky person is going to inherit the beautifully-grown 'Barcelona', (NOT 'Francis Dubreuil') which will be removed. I think an "Elisabeth's China" would be a great replacement for that.

That is FANTASTIC! It will be on my list of places to visit someday. : ) Slightly OT, but is there any way to take cuttings to share of Barcelona since it's not available elsewhere? Is it too recent to be included?

If I have any say in the matter, I'd remove that Barcelona and give it to someone who wants it. But it remains to be seen if they will take my advice.

Oh, and yeah, vaporvac -- 'Barcelona' is WAY out of the period of significance for the Stagecoach Inn, which is more or less 1877-1901. But if you were thinking of cuttings ... fwiw ... Burlington offers it on its own roots.

Thank! You answered both questions. I just didn't want it to be lost. : ) It's great to know that's the one Burling has as I always just assumed it was FD. I'll have to research the differences now.

No -- No one (that I know of) has come up with a "real" 'Francis Dubreuil'.
The rose in modern commerce under that name is -- universally --- 'Barcelona' (And it's a lovely rose, too.)

So -- to be clear -- the rose that Burlington sells is 'Barcelona'.

Okay! Glad you cleared that up! I had it backwards. LOL! I did have Barcelona but it died of root rot last spring in a pot. My fault entirely but I really would like to replace it as it was so beautiful and fragrant. I want it to replace dark desire. I also considered indigo but I think Barcelona is near to the color I had in mind.

It's truly a wonderful thing. A woman I know grew it budded on Fortuniana, and she said it was 5-6-ft. tall and very full. Amazing what rootstock can do, to change a rose.

Beautiful pictures of this interesting place on Facebook, Jeri, thank you for directing us there. I so well remember the picture with the irises and roses from some years past but didn't know where that lovely scene was located. I hope you'll have all the help (and time) you'll need to bring it back to its former beauty. Shame on the ARS for dissociating itself from historic projects (and apparently, roses). Years ago I joined and quickly realized they had nothing to offer me.

In the end, they hadn't enough to offer me, either. But this local society is . . . gone strange. We were very involved for years, but no more.

I joined ARS decades ago and continue even though I wasn't interested in HTs or exhibiting either. These last few years they are really having some nice articles and photos of OGRs. They may be evolving as far as the magazine focus goes in a very positive direction. I have never been to a meeting, and don't plan to go, but their printed mailouts are improved FYI.

    We have two "local" societies.

One is too far away for us to drive to for meetings.

The other, right here in town, has given up its website, and no longer has a newsletter. You can't contact them. We gave up.

My husband is a past President, and a past Treasurer, and I won the ARS Bronze Medal from there, and did their Newsletter for about ten years. We chaired their rose shows for years, and did exhibits at the County Fair -- and there are still some nice folks there. But the people running it now are actively unfriendly. It's sort of creepy.

I feel badly about it, but there's really no "there" there.
