Shutters or no...

last modified: 7 years ago

My wife and I just bought a house in a new subdivision and are currently trying to decide if we want to add shutters to our house to add another accent color to it. Our first concern is wether or not it would look good to have shutters on just one window on the front of the house? (The window in question would be the big double window on the left side of the house) The second concern is if we decided to install shutters then what color should they be? We both think that black or a dark charcoal grey would bring out the color of our shingles and exterior lighting fixtures. Hopefully everyone can help us decide!

No shutters. But I would paint your front door a brighter color add color there and make it more welcoming. Congratulations on the new home.

I agree about the downspouts and a new front door in a color and with more glass. Some plantings along the walkway and in front of the left side is really needed and i hope that walkway is from the street and not the driveway.

I say if you want shutters on the front windows, put them on. :-) Your roof is black and I think you need some dark features to tie it in - so I'd go black (or dark charcoal) for the shutters. Just scale them so they're about 1/2 the one window width. Put shutters on your side garage window for balance. Paint your front door the same black.

Another idea is to forgo the shutters and invest in landscaping. Flank the front windows with some taller shrubs.

Agree with others about painting your downspouts to help them disappear.

No shutters, but please replace the path, it makes no sense hugging the side of the garage. Bring it straight out from the driveway, then arc it to the front door. Now you have a large planting bed between the path and the garage, start a similar bed (not as deep) to the left of the path. Add some midsize trees (crepe myrtle, dogwood, etc) with bushes or low maintenance annuals underneath.

I would recommend speaking to a landscape designer. I think a good one could figure out a way to plant some shrubs and trees to make the front seem a little less naked by the window on the left. Adding shutters is definitely not the answer. Agree with Hallett about redoing that’s pathway!!

You have a lovely home. It looks like it's missing something because you need the landscaping. Once you have that in place, it will make a huge difference. I wouldn't recommend shutters (especially given the disparity in window sizes) but you can buy wider trim to really accent the bigger windows.

"...would bring out the color of our shingles..." You mean the standard-issue black asphalt shingles? Why would you want anyone to look at them or think of them? You don't want to draw attention to the asphalt shingles.

But also, No to the shutter idea. They'll never look real because they'll be too skinny, and they'd be the only shutters on the house, as if you hadn't finished, or ran out of money.

What you need is a tree--an ornamental tree. Think white crape myrtle, cherry, a clump of white birch. Plant it about 10 or 12 feet in front of that window (or a few feet to the right, along the new walkway that Hallett & Co. suggested), but well away from the house.

All of your problems will be solved with landscaping.
