My Winter Blooms

last modified: 7 years ago

I don't know about you, but in winter my AV's grow slowly. Still, I have a batch of small plants - young plants - blooming for the first time. It is always exciting to take my plant and sit down with it and its description to see if I have a "winner" or just another "nice" plant that I have to decide if I want to keep or try again for a true bloom. If the bloom is even close to the description, I will give it more time to see what develops. But there are times it is so off, you know this is a sport or a reversion and there is no hope. Like what I see or not, I have no extra room so it is a carefully made decision to keep or not to keep. Now and then I hit the jackpot with a plant that is healthy and blooming true beyond a doubt. Yippee! Cause for celebration....

Like my Funambule...I have grown this one out from leaves several times over several years, often keeping it a while because it grows in such a lovely perfect rosette all on its own and I love the color of it against the foliage. BUT in all this time I have not been graced with a Funambule that had its fantasy; they were all plain janes. BUT LOOK!

Here are some that have the right fantasy right from the start - and I feel lucky, like winning a little lottery. :-)

Cajun's Fascinating Fury

Ian-Marilen:

Galactic Storm:

Morgan's Berry Berry Pink - with not as much fantasy as I would wish, but it may improve. We'll see.

Others that seem to be blooming true are

Bloomlover's Explosion:

8E Phonm Penh:

and RS-Barbie:

NEXT are the not-so-trues....

LE-Palmira is pure, solid white:

This Russian showed two versions, one that I believe will be correct (when the plant grows up and recovers from taking a spill off the plant shelf) and its sibling that I'm sure will never be as colorful:

LE Fuksievoe Kruhevo [LE-Fuscia Lace] both above (correct)

and below (the light version):

I don't know what to expect from this Rob's Astro Zombie...hmmm we shall have to patient and see what all those buds open like. For now, its one open bloom is....puzzling!

Rob's Humpty Doo has no white:

And Geyser of Color has...well, no geysers:

I think that AE-Hello America is correct:

But Banana Split....well, it's still a baby so we'll give it time.

And one last puzzle: this is Rob's Cool Fruit - in a K-Cup, perfectly happy to be growing in a teeny tiny rosette - but this is a SEMI-mini??? Talk about your "littles, " Rosie. ;-)

That's it for now, folks. And may I say that Houzz continues to be a pain to load photos in a thread...I love having to go back and do a correction to insert photos that showed in the preview, but did not upload to the actual post. Grrrrrr.
