Cpartist's Finished House

Yes I know I said I wouldn't post until Sophie was reinstated but so many of you lived with me through my house building saga that I felt it only fair to show you the almost final project. I say almost final because there are still issues like the slider only sliding halfway open, as well as numerous other issues.

For those who don't know my saga, here is the link to all the threads from the past almost 4 years. Yes you heard me correctly. In March it will be 4 years.

Note that I will have to put the pictures in lots of posts. Very picture heavy.

First the exterior pics. The front of the house is not finished yet with landscaping but the rear is complete and our oasis just as I dreamed it would be.

It is clearly a labor of love and such attention to detail. Just out of interest whereabouts are you located?

Thank you. We are in SW Florida.

Can’t wait to see the kitchen!

It looks wonderful! I love the backyard oasis -- I envy you that!

You've gone through a lot and it's great to see it all come together at last! (I'm going to check out the Kitchen thread next!)

Congratulations on a beautiful house and the end of an epic saga! :-)

But that's the thing. The saga isn't over since there are still lots of issues including a few big ones

    Time to build another one!

    In my next life!

Jeff, I moved into my first actual house in 1991, and was so distressed that the previous inhabitants had gotten around to painting ALL THE TRIM white before they moved out. They lacked the time to paint the last really tiny bedroom, so I was proud to make that my office. I think they thought a painted trim house would sell better, but at that point the house price was right, I wanted a private back yard, and I could no longer deal with the nasty coke dealer who lived above me in the old condo.

I lost out on the driveway from hell (WINTER!!), the dysfunctional kitchen, and so much white trim everywhere. But I didn't have the nasty guy overhead from hell any more.

I loved that room, best of all the rooms, even though it was too small to put a good queen sized bed in there. I made it my office.

SO.. I do have to say, we don't all think the same. I can see places for white (my bathroom fixtures are white) but I really prefer natural wood trim. Even before, for economic reasons, I went with a log-built home for my current residence.

    Beautiful!

Also, I kinda miss Sophie - I didn't know she had been banned...can anyone provide info or a link as to how that went down?

    cpartist thanked BLDG Workshop Inc.

Like artemis, if I could have, I would have had all natural wood trim. Alas, the price of natural wood was prohibitive so I went with painted trim.

BLDG Workshop there were a few threads related to what happened to Sophie but I believe they were removed.

You started building (planning) your home about the time mine was starting. I have been moved in for over 3 years and I have followed your saga. You had many obstacles to overcome especially getting your permits to even begin. You persevered because you knew exactly what you invisioned it would be in the end. BRAVO!! It is magnificent.

LOL. Next week will be 4 years since we put down our deposit. I blame the builder for all the delays and mistakes. The only thing I don't blame him for is when we decided to add a half plot and turn the house north/south. But then to make the changes took months because of his and his draftsman's ineptness.

BTW: We still have a few more large issues although most things are not just punch list items.

    BRAVO!! It is magnificent.

Thank you. I do love it now. It flows well. Has a great organizing concept and the few things I'd do differently are minor in the scheme of things.

Thank you penny design, Joy Peace and HU.

Your house is lovely, cpartist! I haven't followed your process; what can you tell me about your elevator? Is it a full, enclosed elevator? A lift? Did you source it or did the builder? We have left space in our house to install an elevator and would be interested to hear about your experience. Thanks in advance.

Yes it's a full enclosed elevator and yes the builder sourced it. I can take a picture of it in the morning and post.

Here are 3. Ignore the ladder in the elevator. Our fire alarm batteries keep dying so we're keeping the ladder there for now. LOL.

    Gate open.

wow - really nice! Thanks for taking the time to take and upload the photos. I really do appreciate it. Are you on the East or West coast? What do you see, for example, when the elevator is on the second floor and someone is viewing the space on the first floor?

    cpartist thanked MaryAnne Smith

I'm on the west coast of Florida. Here's a pic of the elevator wall on the first floor.

It's in our front foyer. The red door is the front door and the elevator is the door with the frosted glass on the right.

ok. I get it. This photo helps a lot. Going back to the previous photos, I can see part of the open door on the right-hand edge of the photos. I didn't see that before; hence the question : )

So you're in the lower right-hand part of the country and I'm in the way upper left-hand part (but not as far as Alaska!). When I've looked for elevators and/or lifts, it seems like most of the suppliers are located in the mid-west or east. The prices look pretty good . . . and then shipping is added on and they don't look quite as wonderful. Maybe we'll just rig up an electric hoist and a sling.

We didn't go down this year since we needed to stick around for our own build (http://bamasotan.us) and then we also spent a few weeks in Finland as part of a surprise trip our DIL arranged for our son so... Haven't driven by since last spring. It turned out really great. Your eye for color and texture has paid off well. We're excited for you!

cpartist, prices I've seen on the internet seem to range from $20K to $40K. Plus delivery. And then the installing/finishing costs.

I paid just under $20k and that included installation. That was with plain luan panels which my finish carpenter tricked out with the molding, mirror, etc and then my painter painted it all. So obviously a bit more than $20k finished but not much.

If you're building, see what pricing your builder gets.

Wow, I hadn't seen this thread in a while. Love your garden, too, cpartist. First time I saw that.

Question about your windows. I'm assuming you had to do impact, so I'd be really curious about who made your 3-over-1 windows. They look very authentic.

What a beautiful house. My favourite things - the way the natural light is showcased and the colour combination of the kitchen counters and the various stainglassed windows. They just seem to complement one another.

You've clear plastic panels in your elevator gate? Thoughts on that?

We've debated clear vs solid. Clear will require more finish work within the shaft and perhaps somewhat frequent cleaning but elevator guy says that many people prefer it to reduce claustrophobia feelings.

    cpartist thanked opaone

I tend to be claustrophobic which is why I went with the clear plastic, for the panels as well as a mirror on the back wall and frosted glass panels for the actual doors. It all helps to bring light inside

I am super claustrophobic and I will go with the clear plastic like you. I'm glad i aw this post.

I also got a similar quote for an elevator installation on three stops, so I feel good about the price.

Cpartist, I love your house and the feelings it inspires! So refreshing compared to many “modern” homes in my opinion. What resources did you use to find architecturally accurate information for your choices? I find it hard to locate resources that show period accurate details.

Tmoms, i used American Bungalow magazine, books by Jane Powell, Robert Winter and Paul Duchscherer. I also looked at lots of period houses and also perused old plans from companies like Sears, Aladdin and Montgomery Ward.

Lastly I took advantage of the advice of some architect friends

Sun feather the blinds are typical top down. Right outside the window we planted an areca palm and it already covers the window so no one can see in.

The mirror was purchased at an art show from theperfectview.com
