Chandelier Advice

Hi! Ordered this chandalier from Ballard Designs and would like advice if we should hang it or return it. The measurements worked when calculated for the space but not sure. Wondering if we should return it for the smaller one (last pic). Trying to find something that complements both sets of pendant lights.

keep rectangular light
return for smaller version
find something else

Do you need pendants at the TV? Seems like they are unnecessary.

Susie the pendants are staying. We love them otherwise there is no other light when tv on.

Well my advice would be to get some lamps in the TV area and IMO the larger light is too large for that table and trying too hard to match . I like chandeleirs that actually light the table not the ceiling so I would keep looking.

I agree with Susie and Patricia - if you need lights there, can you put recessed lights in the ceiling? Even two small round flushmounts would be better. They look like eyes and antennae on a bug to me right now (sorry!!)

Regarding the light over your table - it's hard to know what size you should get without knowing the dimensions of your table. But the Hadley light looks like it has two chains connecting it to the ceiling, and you have a ceiling medallion, so not sure how that will work unless you remove the medallion.

I would remove the medallion. The table is 80 inches long by 52 inches wide. The pendant lights are a mute point.
does anyone think the smaller Hadley light would be better?
and Heather thanks for your rude comment on something I did not even ask about. We actually get a lot of compliments on them and they were recently installed to replace much nore dated ones. They compliment our end tables that have the same geometric pattern and other items in our house.

we have recess lighting. we do not use it as it's too much light.

This would be the matching chandelier. I don't like the idea of matching the two lights and want something that both complements what is over the bar and tv. We like the pendants there and at night we are very happy with the lighting. I would use the recessed lighting over lamps. I think whatever chandelier we get I will like it better than the current one put in by previous owners (builders of this house). Think I'm going to go for the Hadley and hope once it's hung it doesn't appear too large. Thank you for the help!

here it is with a much smaller table than our's

I also am thinking of purchasing the rectangular Hadley chandelier from Ballard’s... I’m just concerned it might be too big. Interested in seeing how you like it!
    will keep you posted AC

It is way too big , and the pic with the small table looks bad. I'm sorry to say that i strongly agree that you should not have pendants in front of the TV. Im sure there will be plenty of "if I/she/he like it that's all that matters" responses to this, and sure you can say that about anything , but this IS an advice forum, after all: has anyone ever seen an inspiration picture, or a professionally designed space that has pendants over a TV or even over a fireplace? They simply don't belong here. I can't imaging they enhance the TV viewing either, they most certainly cause a glare that you have probably adjusted to. Get rid of them and then maybe the smaller Ballard light will work.

Sorry, another vote for greenfish, Susie and Patricia. I sense a little temper tantrum and ungraciousness, “I want what I want and just answer my question and shut up”. Really not very considerate of designers that are spending their personal time giving professional opinions. You’d be better off asking friends and family that agree with you every time and then you’ll get the answer you want.
no one was answering the question present then decided to criticize. If she came into my house would she tell me to my face my lights look like bug traps or whatever she said? And you jumping in to criticize me being done with the unhelpful conversation. Would you come say that to my face? Seems like everyone has big balls over the internet. My policy if you don't have anything nice or helpful to say don't say anything at all (especially after I said we like the pendants).
no glare greenish and they highlight my favorite bible verse that is more important than the TV.

The Hadley is 39 in long x 18 in wide so the dimensions appear to be ok but sitting on your table it looks massive. I think you should keep looking. You have dark pendants over the bar and tv so something lighter might look better

    thank you.

should also mention our house was custom built and designed by an electrician (you will not find another house like our's). maybe the pendants are not everyone's liking but we like them and they are very functional.

Ballard will work with me on the return cost wise it makes most sense to try to find something else from them. Any opinions on these lights:

How about something semi-flush to eliminate the look of too many pendants? rather than "match" your current pendants I would compliment but differentiate: perhaps a drum light, something more solid and less cage-y

Semi flush with 12 feet ceilings? The light is only used/on during dinner. Would that work? I think the hanging light there now works with others but to me it looks like a boob and was from previous owners;)

Yeah I was going to suggest this but 12' high I guess you need it to drop down. I would still look at drum lights.

the more I look at it that medallion has to go! (please forgive the dancing children...)

That's a good idea greenfish, a drum light would soften the look a bit. Something else I noticed is that the recessed lighting really stands out. Can you paint those covers the same color as the ceiling?

I dont think there is any painting those. I dont think anyone really noticed the lighting. It's so high up and I have a million other things that catch the eyes:)

is something like this better? I really love the look of the rectangular chandeliers but if they won't work in my space I understand. Any of the Ballard ones I posted an option?

No. something really simple and solid with the least possible number of vertical lines.

If I walked into someone's home and they didn't ask for my opinion, I would never comment on their furnishings or decor, unless I was telling them that I liked something.

If you specifically ask for an opinion on the lights in a space, then I will give my honest opinion. I've asked my friends about things in my house multiple times. One friend told me my wallpaper looked like a woman's private parts. Another person told me that my two round flushmounts in the same room looked like a set of boobs. The veining on the stone on my fireplace looks like a giant alien. Some of these things I can change, some things cannot be changed. Some things I like, and I don't care if other people don't like them because it is my house. I don't get angry with people because they tell me that my lights look like boobs when I specifically asked for their feedback on the lighting in a space. I just laugh about it and say "you know, you're right, they do look like boobs!!" and then move on. Or change them if it continues to bother me.

You asked for advice on picking a chandelier to match the pendants. Basically everyone on here is saying that they don't like the pendants in front of the TV and that it is a relatively easy change to swap out a small fixture, so that's probably why people suggested it. You said you wanted to keep lights there for a functional reason, so people were just trying to suggest alternative light sources - recessed lighting, flushmounts, lamps, etc. You are still insisting on the lights, so it seems that you like them, which is perfectly fine since it's your home.

There's no need to get angry or upset - nobody is being rude, we are just giving our opinion trying to help since you posted to a website asking for help. I would say the exact same thing to my friends or family if they specifically asked for my opinion about coordinating a chandelier with a set of pendants.

Also, just because a home is custom-built by an electrician doesn't mean the lighting scheme will make sense. My electrician tries to put lights EVERYWHERE, and I have to talk him back from the ledge. We had to redo our kitchen ceiling and lighting after a flood, and I removed half the lights he had installed because our ceiling looked like Swiss cheese with holes everywhere. I do not share a sense of style with most electricians I know. I just want my electricians to install lights in a quick and professional manner and not burn our house down.

thank you AC totally different look in the air and I love it too! I love that it's simple but has some white to it with the lights.

I'm so happy we got Hadley hung! Still need to purchase bulbs and have a little repair work needed on the ceiling but we love it! thank you for the advice!
