I would take the existing vanity/storage out. Why leave that odd space at the end where the stool is? Love the storage cabinet! A cute farm house vanity with that cabinet next to it would look very nice.

I also think since there is so much room beside the vanity, dealing with that wall would be the best solution. Take out what you have including the tall cabinet and replace with the biggest vanity you can fit there. You will then have more storage, more counter space and a bigger space for a larger mirror. Then get a wall cabinet that is not too deep for the wall across from it in front of the door. It will help hide the toilet from the door a little too. A unit with doors or drawers and open shelving maximizes storage.

What type of budget do you have? It is an unfortunate layout with the toilet at the end like that. I'd want something on that wall (facing the tub) to distract the eye from the toilet. Perhaps shiplap is a good idea. Do paint the vanity and storage cabinet to get it in synch with your farmhouse look. Would the bathroom hutch fit where the stool is? I'd want something in that corner to balance the vanity area. The door faces the vanity?

What were you thinking for lighting? Are you keeping it overhead or were you moving it to have two sconces beside the mirror? You'd have to remove the cabinet on the right if you got wall sconces.

I’d be inclined to paint everything white and light grey walls, your biggest impact will be the floors with something like the tiles in pics. That toilet sitting on that long wall would drive me nuts. Perhaps a big potted fern to disguise it

Irene is right about the flooring. If you don't have the budget to replace the flooring, tile or vinyl can be painted.

Irene...I agree with the toilet placement. The entire bathroom is designed poorly. I like the idea of those shutters for the windows too.

If this is a budget temp fix PAINT the vanity, nothing to loose there. I think white will help it blend to the farm house look you want to get to.

An inexpensive narrow console may work on the toilet wall. It would not be as deep as the storage unit you were looking at:

Thanks James. I actually have a storage ladder type thing that is printed black in my basement now. Maybe I can paint it a different color and use that :) It is only a 28 inch space so I have to see if it fits.

Do not forget that a dresser can stand in for a vanity. A vanity does not need to be a "vanity" to work. You have space for something larger there so think outside the box. Really depends on budget, patience and skill set (DIY or hiring someone?). I'd be mulling over the transformation while priming those walls. :) (I love yellow but it's not doing a good job in this space.)

The former owners painted it yellow. I have now lived here a year and a half now and have done nothing to it lol.

My comment about colour had to do with your admission of living with those yellow walls for a year. I would not have lasted a year with that yellow (on my screen).

In the world of bad bathrooms yours is ok, you should see mine. If the cabinets are solid, painting them might be a good solution, and doing something with the mirror, the lights might actually be OK as is. The empty space is weird but you could use it for something like a laundry hamper (perhaps that’s what was for?) A picture over the towel rail might be nice too, maybe a hanging plant by the window.

Perhaps that bathroom was originally split into two rooms with the vanity space outside the room with tub and toilet. My first apartment was done that way to make it easier to share the space.

If you have a ReStore or similar local to you, you might be able to find a larger vanity for the space. I would look to run a countertop from wall to wall with combo of vanity, base storage cabinets and open space underneath...design based on price and availability of materials at ReStore.

Here's a suggestion. Don't do the shiplap now and put that money towards a better vanity / storage. The shiplap can get done in the future as funds allow. Personally, I think an updated vanity and just painting walls will get you further as a first step.

I wouldn't put any furniture against the right-hand wall -- I think you'll find it makes a bottleneck on the way to toilet or shower.

I don't mind your current mirror and lights. I'd put my money into new wall paint, a shower curtain and rug that bring in a color you like (echoed by art on that right-hand wall, above the towels), and new hardware for the vanithy. I like your metal shelves, too, where you might keep things that are a bit cuter to see, like extra towels and soap, etc. You'll need to rehang your hand towel, though, to get it higher and out from behind this.

Isn’t the plug by a sink supposed to be GFI? Could be wrong, but I thought so.

@ J Williams Good observation. You are correct it needs to be a GFCI. But one GFCI can protect multiple outlets. Also, it could be protected with a GFCI breaker. Something for the homeowner to verify.

I think you might be OK. From your pictures, it looks like the outlet on the wall to the left of the vanity is a GFCI outlet. You'll know if you look at it and see "Test" and "Reset" buttons. Plug a radio or lamp or hairdryer into the outlet closest to the vanity. Push the "Test" button on the other outlet. If whatever you have plugged in stops working when you press test and resumes working when you press reset, you're protected.

Extend the countertop and the mirror to the wall. The hooks can stay there, and the stool can be stored under the counter. I won’t turn the toilet to face the door. Put a wide Roman shade over the window.

How about a door separating the vanity from the toilet and shower? It could have a transom on top to let light through.

The tile would look better than the wood look, how would you run the wood vinyl, may make room look more narrow

What about a bench under the towel bar instead of a tall cabinet?
