Columns - Round or Square

We are adding new siding and windows - white windows and white trim. Siding paint color not sure yet. Looking for ideas for balcony rail as well as adding first story columns underneath balcony columns. Also columns should be larger than existing with some molding trim.

Round or square columns and balcony rail material?

Would like to keep traditional look.

Ideas?

Monterey Revival style would not have columns below because the upper balcony is cantilevered. Here are a few examples of how others have embellished their Monterey Revival homes to make them really charming. Add shutters

I would not add columns. That would not look right because the upper balcony is not wide enough to get it far enough away from the house for columns to make sense. I would just stay focused on painting the red brick.

Beverly is right on with all of her suggestions for your house ! Beautiful ! Enjoy and pull it all together ..unify the two floors ...with a light color ...because right now it looks as if someone dropped a second story that belongs elsewhere ...

The columns under the balcony would lookbad as they are not needed, Beverly’s ideas are a good way to handle this style of house and what colunms you need should be square.
