Kitchen counter decision

We are redoing the kitchen in my husband's family farm house that was built in the 1860s by his great, great, great grandfather. Needless to say, we don't want things to look too modern! We have ordered white cabinets and think we want a soapstone look for the countertops using quartz. Does someone have experience with silestone charcoal soapstone or Corian's Nero soapstone, or something else they recommend?

Your home sounds wonderful!

My recommendation would be honed Virginia Mist (aka Jet Mist) granite. I have it in my kitchen paired with white cabinets and oak floors, reclaimed beams, and reclaimed brick. It is black with subtle white swirls and is very durable and easy to clean. The honed version is a casual authentic farmhouse look, and looks a lot like soapstone. It's also not too expensive compared to quartz.

I can't say enough about this material--I've had butcher block, laminate, quartz, and marble as countertop materials, and Jet Mist is my favorite!

Was going to suggest exactly what Diane said. Great product and IMO better than quartz. More authentic too.

We were looking at soapstone for our 60 year old MCM. We ended up with honed Virginia Mist and are very, very happy with it.
