Yes they are. My easter lilies are popping up down here so it might be those, or it might be tiger lilies or some type of asiatic lily. It would be cool to see what variety is naturalizing so well for you there.

Florida is a hot-sport for alien organisms going bananas and becoming nuisances so if these lilies are even popping up in kimpa's lawn it may not be so cool.

Lilies don't spread like that, they clump. If someone dug some up and tossed them onto the lawn, the baby cormlets may have settled in and started to grow. I'd just dig them up and put them into the garden where they belong.

Florida_Joe's_Z10a, you can grow tiger lilies here in Zone 10 Florida? I thought they would NOT grow here..... do they come back year after year, or do you lift and refrigerate your tigers.... I miss them and the asiatic ones too. I am from the midwest and I really miss a lot of things that my father use to grow. Thanks for your input.

Easter lilies are the only ones I know of that will come back every year in that zone. The others are treated like annuals.

There are lilies that will grow in z10, though. Crinum, daylily, amaryllis, rain lily and more.

Lilies (Lilium) produce seed capsules as well as there being certain species that produce bulbils (lilies are bulbous plants rather than cormous ones) in the leaf axils.

If a clump has been damaged or is not in peak condition for other reasons variably sized but generally smaller shoots may come up, resulting in a clump of more diffuse appearance. As in the photo posted on this thread.

I'm in zone 9a not 10 but last year I planted tiger lilies in the ground. Im waiting to see if they come back up. We've had a pretty warm winter. Not much freezing at all, maybe a day or two -no hard freezes though. They look real pretty with roses.

I bought a few more pkgs of bulbs just in case, but I hope mine from last year come back too. Walmart just put out all their bulbs so I got some while they are fresh.

Sharon I'm sorry to get you excited. I've never seen tiger lilies here in zone 10. I was just thinking maybe they might grow in zone 9a. Gloriosa lilys I see a lot here. Those are really cool.

No. They are a tuberous rooted perennial and in the family Colchicaceae rather than Liliaceae.

Its been so warm here this winter, my gloriosa lilies didnt even go totally dormant. They always have before.

The relevant thing about all those other "lilies" within the context of this thread is that the plant asked about is not any of those - the shared common name doesn't really imply anything of practical significance.

Not a true lily in the sense that it's not in the genus Lilium, but it is in the order Lilales which is why it looks so lily like just like all the other species in that order. Sorry for going off topic from the plants in question.

sultry, True for me, too, in 9B. Yesterday I finally cut off a 3-yard (yes, yard!) long stem growing against a wall; it was still green although fading. It had yet to produce its flower. Now I wish I had left it alone just to see if it would eventually bloom.

Where do you guys get your gloriosa lilies from ? I don't ever see them actually offered at garden centers.

I got mine at a nursery (not a chain) at least 10 years ago. Luckily they have persisted.

Sometimes some of the Ace Hardware's carry gloriosa lilies. I have ordered them off ebay in the past. There is also a website called Easy to Grow Bulbs that has 3 or 4 different kinds of gloriosas. Park Seeds had them one year but I don't know if they still do.

I grow mine in pots here because something always digs them up.
