The lower leaves has a yellow ring on the leaves. The upper leaves are ok. Is that mean there is a deficiency? See picture below. Thanks

What more can you tell us about this plant? Is it a new plant? What kind of conditions (light, water and such) do you give it. Has it been over watered recently?

    Sans2014,

I have this plant for a while and it is currently in office. I don't think it get sufficient light especially in weekend, it is in complete darkness alone. However, its leaves are quite green. It is not overwater because I grow it hydroponically. So I wonder what kind of elements it lack of in the fertilizer.

What kind of fertilizer do you use? Are you using tap water and is it municipal (city) water that might have chemicals added to it? The light situation is not helping the plants health either, 2 days without light ever week can't be good for it.

    Sans,

I use optimara violet food. I bought long ago. I think there is expiration date on fertilizer?? Yea, there is nothing I can do about light. I sit at the dark corner without window. I think the tap water is fine. My coworker 's violet is normal.

yellowing- hum, how often do you fertilize it? I have never grown these hydroponically. hum....

When I was growing mini violets in an office building, I simply took possession of a windowsill. They were communal property, being outside everyone's personal areas.

LoL. Whoever sit at the window will be annoyed if I trespass his/her cubicle all the time.

If this violet would be sitting in a normal soil - I would say - it is time to repot and make sure it has enough nitrogen. Since you are growing it hydroponically... hard to say. I would flash the roots repeatedly - especially if it is in semi-hydro - in hydroton. Optimara fertilizer is very good, and no - it never expires, these salts are very stable. The only thing - it is not for hydroponics - probably for hydroponics they use a little bit different formulations - try Dynagrow Grow - or anything else with more or less balanced formula for NPK, microelements and marked for hydroponics. But it is all wild guesses.

Otherwise - every so often I see photos of AVs grown hydroponically - and I would say - yours is very decent looking plant - most of the time they look not as good as soil grown. And yours is not lacking anything.

If you are worried that your plant is sitting in a dark on weekends - get a timer, screw a CFL bulb in a table lamp - and put your plant under. I do not think it will be a big problem- CFL lights are very safe and very economical - so hopefully the boss won't mind.

*joke post* Irina, do you regularly flash your violets? :) Is that your secret to success ?

Ok, Irina meant to type flush...really she did, and she didn't mean to put them down the toilet either. Maybe she should have used 'rinse' instead. Ok yes, Irina, I'm a writer, remember? word choice can be very important.

Irina is usually right on the money, follow her advise.

No, I really flash them. Show them my aged fanny. Just kidding.

Sorry - not a native speaker - and as I age - the typos creep up.

Hmmm... may be it will really help... or scare the bugs... need to try....

Anyway - I rarely flush my AVs - I repot them when they look off. Plus - I like them young. Some do well if you reroot the crown - it rejuvenates them. Some better started from a leaf. Old Blue Dragon... is one ugly dragon....I do not think rerooting helps this one.

    Irina,

Thanks for the advise and I will try those you suggeste. My boss left before me every day and he doesn't care cause he is not the one paying electricity. :D. I agreed that growing in the soil is much better, at least it is not against the nature.

    Thanks

Irina, if there is such a thing as a native speaker, I am one. However, that doesn't mean that I don't type things that make absolutely no sense about every day :)

It drives me nuts... I lived most of my life with close to an absolute literacy - if once in a blue moon I'd make a typo - it would stick out for me as a pile of dog poop on a white carpet. Both in Russian and English. Not anymore... aging puts wrinkles... everywhere...

In the last week, I've basically looked at what I wrote and wondered if aliens are in control of my typing hands. What? are those strings/wires? :0

There a number of reasons for yellowing leaves. Could be just old leaves...time to remove them. Or under watering/under fertilizing. It could be as irina said, time to re-pot too.

Your plant leaves looks like the yellowing explained in the post below, maybe helpful:

I have a problem with this too, it effects the lower, usually bigger leaves, but very annoying to keep plucking off leaves and then then plant is all holey.

    Beeperkeeper,

Meanwhile, I only have this plant has this issue. The leaves are very green but has a yellow ring.

I wouldn't pull those leaves (as shown in the OP). I don't pull leaves until they appear to have lost all viability ... or if they are seriously compromising the aesthetic of the plant. Markings on the leaves like this are rarely serious, ... and typically signal that something in the culture needs attention.

African Violets are living, growing things ... which will be subject to the affects of their environment and care. It would be better to figure out what's going on ... and fix any problems.

If I go to sell them, I have to pluck them off, so I try to get them off before its time to sell, so hopefully the plant grows in time.
