Need suggestions for my Mud Room layout

I need to finalize the layout for storage in the mud room. I want to do at least 5 open lockers so everyone has their own space, but I'm not sure whether to wrap them in a L shape under the stairs, or put them on opposite sides of the room. My husband thinks there is enough space to put them on opposite sides of the room, but 95% of the time he enters the house by himself. I'm the one that picks up the kids and has 4 people running in the house at once. I think it might be too tight a fit. Does anyone have suggestions? If I do a L-shape, how would I utilize the corner of the L? Also, what is the best size locker? I'd love to have hooks on the back & side walls of the locker, so I'm leaning towards 18" per locker.

Below is my floor plan & inspiration photo for lockers. I won't have any doors on the lockers. It will be all open without drawers/doors. I'll use baskets on a shelf for small items. BTW, the closet will hold the out-of-season coats/gears. The lockers need to hold all the stuff we need as we are running out the door in the mornings...a coat, backpack, lunch box, gloves, scarf, hat, 1 pair of shoes & 1 pair of boots.

Hmm, this is tough. I'm no expert (but I am a Mom) and wonder what if you put the lockers where the closet, and put the closet on the other side - with part of it under the stairs? I'm not sure if that was what your husband already suggested or if he meant the wall opposite where the lockers currently sit. The biggest thing I always think of with mudrooms is making sure that everyone has a place to sit and put on shoes/boots, without bumping into each other. I think as long you can open the door from the garage and still have room to move around / sit down / etc - you'll have a very functional space! Someone with more experience with this stuff might have more specific /better suggestions on how to best use the space overall.

OR - do the L-shape and go under the stairs for one or two lockers, where the ceiling is high enough - then use the rest of that wall to stack baskets or other storage items?

Kate, thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately it is too late to swap the closet and the lockers. Everything is framed, sheetrocked & primed. I'll definitely have a dedicated spot to sit and take off shoes. Even if we do lockers for the kids to sit, there will be a chair /stool for my husband and myself to sit and put on boots. I'll take another look at the L-shape design and add in baskets/shelves. That is a good idea for the awkward space where the ceiling drops.
