Should I paint my banisters black?

I am trying to slowly give my 13yr old home updates. I am transitioning the decor from traditional to transitional design. Should I have my banisters painted black?

for me they are already black

    No.

No. The stained wood is beautiful and low maintenance. If you want to update the look, switch out the metal balusters for a plain square profile the colour of your light trim.

I’d change the carpet on the stairs to a pattern with a little black in it.

Black paint on the wood is going to do nothing for the look with the black iron spindles. I would concentrate on doing a stair runner in a black and white print or another print. Change the carpet and you will elevate the look.

I painted my wood handrails dark chocolate brown. (The stain was worn off in patches or had been badly lacquered by the previous owners) it was painstaking work of cleaning, sanding and painting 2 or 3 coats.
Black may feel heavy as you already have wrought iron. A new carpet runner maybe the way to go to freshen things up (like others have suggested)

I would. I happen to like black more than wood.

So, lets look at some options.

You have a rather traditional looking staircase and surrounding decor. If you paint the railings black, it's going to disappear into the wrought iron.

Notice all the white surrounding it. even the risers.

Nothing else is black. would you be willing to paint the trim work upstairs black? or how about the doors?

What if you took off the carpet and did the risers in black, stained the treads and updated to a more contemporary railing?

more all black, but white risers and darker treads. Notice the newer light fixture in the foyer

you could always darken your stain color and get a more modern, square style spindles in white

this one looks good. the black/white contrast w/the herringbone stair runner, squared off newel posts.

who says you have to do black?! Live a little.

Thank you for taking time to respond. I have extensive white trim in my house and very open floor plan so I would need to paint everything if I started changing trim color in hall. Love the carpet selections! I am leaning towards an animal print.

Sewing room, My question is this, what direction specifically are you moving towards taking the decor of your home? It looks like your freshened your wall paint up already to a greige? What about the chandelier in the stairway? It is very traditional. I love the animal print. Looks like you are choosing the gray one? What about the wood don't you like? Is it that it is dark? Painting it black isnt going to change it much IMO because the spindles are dark and the wood is dark. If you want it to make a pow statement painting it white and leaving the spindles black will do that. Then bringing in a strong gray animal print runner and getting a large black chandelier would completely change the look of that entrance foyer and brighten it up. Chandelier possibilities shape wise

Also I might add that the iron wall pieces at the top of the stairs are just disappearing because of the spindles. One large painting there with some color would be magnificent!
