That's great!! They are not typically found east of the Cascades.

Pretty darn chilly on this side as well so I filled up my feeders with still warm hummer juice this morning :-) They are the one thing that keeps me interested in my garden in winter. Otherwise I tend to ignore it from November to March. Too gray and soggy to be enjoyable!

They've been expanding their range eastward for some time now. In 2016, a couple living in the Valley hosted one through the winter, but this is the first for me. I saw a male back in November, and almost fell out of my chair!

Enjoy your hummers. We love to watch ours and keep the feeder full and defrosted. Great photos. We are getting down to about 20F tonight, The feeder is in and I will put it back in the am. One male is getting so fat that he might topple off the top of the garden hook that hold the feeder. It is a constant drama to watch him chase off all the other birds - it is his territory - and he is not sharing! But, when he is somewhere else there are several who sneak in and get their share.

Anna's seem to wander quite a bit, and sometimes to very cold climates. That is great you are getting to enjoy a visitor in your area during such winter conditions. I bet she was happy you thawed out the sugar water! I suppose she was licking the block like some hummers do with tree sap, but it brings to my mind nightmare visions of stuck tongues. ;)

It's a 3' long heat cable such as would be used for heating pipes. My weekend is over after today so I can't babysit the feeder. Now I won't have to worry about it!

Did you cut the perches off the feeder? We just bought on like yours, but it has perches for when they feed.

This model has a screw underneath that I remove. I think hummers are more interesting feeding on the fly!

I wrap my feeders in those little christmas lights (has to be the incandescent, not LED) to keep them thawed. Not sure how warm the heat tape gets but if too warm it could cause the solution to ferment (like in the summer) if it's too warm for too long.

They seem to be pretty tough little creatures. I just hung out a wire suet feeder stuffed with cat fur, as I believe they start building their nests very soon. They LOVE the cat fur, as do the chickadees (and probably some other nest builders). The suet feeder makes it easy for them to land, pluck and card the fur before they fly away with it.
