I've got three walking onions do you have any attenborugh's pitcher plant to trade?

Glenn, do you know for sure they are dead? My wild onions haven't come up yet, but I dug around them and they are still there.

Karen no I don't have attenborughs pitcher plant. That's a very rear and highly endangered plant your going to have a hard time finding one.

DG yes the dried up a are gone.

Karen I can offer you mulberry cutting, rain lillies, chaya,or Cherokee tomato seeds that are fresh.

Slightly off topic here, but would someone please explain what walking onions are. Do they produce underground bulbs? or are they cut for use like green onions (scallions)?

Not off topic at all!

They are Allium proliferum. At the flower head, baby bulbs develop in a cluster, and the stem leans / falls forward, where the babies can then root where they land, hence "walking."

They eventually go underground, but do not get large.

No idea if they are edible - never checked - I don't grow them for food, but for the fun factor.

Could one plant Egyptian Onions in the fall in NE FL? Would the tops survive if we got a hard freeze?

They are easy to grow in a large pot, which could be moved if a freeze threatens.

they are super hardy. hardy to zone 3 i believe. so yeah they have no problem withstanding winter, and get established slowly over winter to get a jump start in spring.

Hello everyone, I'm new on this version of GardenWeb. It has been a number of years since I stopped in, due to life happening, but I thought I would drop in and see what's going on and saw your posts.

There are several varieties of Egyptian Walking onions as well as topset leeks. The entire plant is edible and the mother bulbs also multiply similar to shallots. I currently am growing out Heritage (a white, sweet variety) catawissa - red, mccullar's - white and Moritz - red. I have been using the greens for scallions and they each have a bit different flavor. Some are more zesty and others more mild. ALL DELICIOUS!

I have a few extra of the Catawissa that I have not planted yet, but also planted a batch to offer later that are getting their fall growth so they will bulb or walk next Summer. Won't be set up to ship plants until after the first of the year, but I do have a few un-planted bulblets.

topset onions are hardy to zone 3. They will die back in cooler zones and will come back in Spring. Usually we have green onions from them through Winter until the new shoots come up in Spring. We had a very very early first frost - it actually got down to 26 degrees - nipped my bananas but the topsets are doing well. Cut off a batch for dinner this evening.

I would also love to have some Egyptian Onion. I had these in the yard of a home I owned years ago and I used them vigorously. I have Charantais Melon from France to trade or I am willing to pay for this.

Do you still have seeds available, i would love some?
