Thoughts on Master Bath Layout

Hi all! Just wanted to get thoughts and opinions on the attached Master Bathroom layout. Just wanting to see if we are effectively using the space. Please note that the shower will be door-less and we were actually contemplating moving the entry to the shower to the long wall. And also we are not installing a bathtub of any kind. Thanks in advance for any and all advice/criticism.

I like the design generally. One thought I have is to move your secondary shower head to the opposite wall so that your wall between your shower and your vanities can be glass (or partial glass with a pony wall), which will open the space visually and get more light into your shower.

Yeah, agreed. That shower would be a dark cave — make the long wall glass.

have you lived with another home ehere you walk through the bathroom to the closets? reaction is mixed. some people love it. others don't. a longer , bigger look at the plan would help.

Thank you for the feedback thus far. Will definitely look into opening up that shower a bit. We actually do like the proximity of the bathroom to the closets and have lived in a home with a similar layout. I agree, everyone either likes it or hates it. No grey area there.

I had concerns about the vanity areas and what to do with the large size of those areas. I’ve attached a photo of the whole master suite.

Re the long vanities, since you don't have a linen closet in your bathroom, you could put a small linen cabinet on the end of each vanity run. This isn't your layout, obviously, but here is what it could look like:

Based on some partial measurements I see on your floor plan, I estimate that the total space of the 2 closets and the bathroom is 16'8" x 16'8" but the space drawn on the plan looks more rectangular than squared. Can you give us the total measurements of the 2 closets combined with the master bathroom?

Also, can the windows be moved? Is a 4'0" wide toilet area a must (can it be more like 3'0" or 3'6")?

Must the 2 closet be the same size?

Assuming that your bathroom is 16'8" x 9'8", this is one possibility. There are pros and cons to it in comparison to your initial layout:

    Pros:

    More natural light

    Wider walkway behind the vanity

2 cabinets (accessed from the 3'0" walkway)

    More spacious toilet area

Shower can be doorless if you like

    Cons:

Smaller vanity (I must say that a 7'8" double sink vanity is still quite spacious)

The total eye level visual depth when you enter the bathroom would be 5'10" (2'0" for vanity + 3'10") as opposed to 9'8"

Ideally, even though I would prefer a 4'6" walkway behind the vanity, 3'10" is still a functional space.

EDIT: If you want, you can have a 21" deep vanity instead of 24". That will bring your walkway to 4'1".

Also, may I suggest that you add windows on the East wall of your bedroom? I also recommend that your center your closet pocket door. This way, you can have a 2'0" depth space for your rod all around your closet.

BTW, the layout I suggested above can be modified to be very similar to the one you have initially. You would just need to make 2 vanities instead of one and move them one each side of the bathroom (and moving the shower and toilet area behind each vanity). By sharing the same wall for vanity-toilet area (and vanity-shower) you gain 4 in. for your walkway. Your vanities could be 6'6" long each and you can have a 3'8" walkway in between with a window on the North wall.

    Another option:

EDIT: I suggest to move the vanity 2 ft to the right so your walkway would be 5'8" not 7'8" (which I find a bit too much). The space behind the vanity would be used.

were it mine, i would probably look at a long closet to the west/ left, and a long and narrow bath to the right.
I'm going to think/ chew on this awhile. the existing arrangement doesn't really give the op a lot of closet space , after turns, nor give a lot of vanity space.

Thank you all for the detailed feedback! Truly appreciated! I’m weird about symmetry so I do like the equal size closets and vanity areas. However not opposed at all to the second layout option from @Suzanne_m. Really like how it utilizes the space. Thank you so much for taking the time to draft these up. Also we did add another bedroom window. Thanks for the insight on the closet doors. Definitely will plan on centering those.

You could enlarge your closet by 2'2" and have your bathroom 7'6" deep.

I am trying to give you as much natural light as possible. If you can install a skylight, it would be even better:

EDIT: If you make your closets 2'2" longer, you can choose to have a larger walkway (3'6"-4'0") between the master bedroom and the bathroom. You would still have more storage in your closets than what you currently have.
