ADVICE! Mid-Century Bathroom Facelift

Hello! As you can see (from the not so great photos), we have an original mid century bathroom. The tiles are still in great condition and I'm willing to work around the color. I've been going back and forth about wall-papering the space up to the shower, leaving the shower area without wallpaper (but including the arched wall with wallpaper). I apologize for the photo quality, as I was trying to capture the space enough to see all walls.

Thoughts or ideas on embracing the soft peach color to give the space a boost or any other comments on sprucing up?

Hmm, none of the photos I posted show.

Nancy in Mich, thank you! The photos didn’t show but the links worked.

I'm not a professional designer, but what about bringing in some of the black? How would a white shower curtain with black trim look? I also vote against an over-the-toilet cabinet and vote yes for shelves that are at the right height. Less bulky.

Not to be the naysayer of the bunch, but I'll point out that unless you have a REALLY good fan or window ventilation in that bathroom, wallpaper in a bath with a shower is not a great idea. The steam will eventually make the wallcovering peel. I'm guessing that since you have what looks to be original electrical outlets, the fan--if it you have one--is probably not up to today's standards.

I might consider a very pale peach or mint paint vs. wallpaper. And then find some fabulous coordinating fabric--maybe palm leaves?--for the shower curtain. I agree, too, with the previous comment about replacing the mirror with an oval one that has a metal frame to work with your faucets.

I would not do wallpaper, but I'm not sure the white paint is working in here. I think I would get a bunch of testers and just experiment with paint, maybe a very pale mint. I would consider getting rid of the pedestal sink with a console sink. And most importantly, I think this space would really benefit from some green, like a leafy shower curtain.

From what I understand, they have a skylight that opens, Sabrina. Picture up thread. No fan. Pale peach or mint paint would be pretty!

RedRyder, a white shower with black trim sounds like a good idea to me as well!

Suzchaps, your floor may be new, but have you thought of black tiles used in mid century bathroom renovations? Then your walls may only need artwork.

emho23, a console sink is a really good idea. I do love how they have that integrated towel bar. Hadn't thought of that option. Perhaps one with a shelf for additional storage? Could be an option if changing the sink doesn't damage any visible tiles.

suzchaps, have you looked at The Container Store for storage solutions? They have slim cases with shelves that might fit as well as all sorts of storage drawers (I prefer clear ones but it can look cluttered). Sometimes, the trick to finding a storage solution that works for us is thinking outside the box. You don't need to limit yourself to "storage solutions" stores. :)

There's no "one perfect" way to do this bathroom. If you want to try wallpaper, try it. It may work; it may not. What's the worst that can happen? It won't stay put and you'll have wasted some time, effort and money. You decide if it's worth the risk. Always order samples of whatever paper you're considering. And if you consider painting, test out the colours on inexpensive art canvases before committing. Those are two ways to mitigate your risks. Shower curtains can be bought and returned if they don't work in the space. You have a well-maintained bathroom that fulfills its main functions - everything else is gravy. Have fun with it!

Sabrina Alfin Interiors, thanks for your thoughts. I am leaning more and more away from wallpaper as we all talk it out. Perhaps I just need to let it goes and move on with simply decorating the space around the colors. If I had a half bath, I wouldn't even be questioning the wallpaper...maybe in our future home. ;) I do like your idea of a black trimmed shower curtain to help bring in some distinct lines from the tile trim.

emho23, thank you! While I do agree a console sink would be better, not sure I have the energy to replace the current sink. I also agree about the leafy greens. For some reason, I imagine leaf green pairing nicely withe the light peach tile, which is why I have those three palm pictures on the wall across from the toilet. With that said, perhaps a soft mint paint would be calming without looking too much like a candy shop.

tartanmeup, thanks for these options and the encouragement to take pressure off myself for needing to embrace the 1940s bathroom. ha!

that bathroom is RAD, I wouldn't paint it or paper it, (maybe a shade of a darker grey), otherwise I would update the sink, and storage...

    Please do embrace it...it's great!

Thoughts on this? I would change out the palm pictures and then hopefully update our medicine cabinet mirror. https://www.target.com/p/shower-curtain-floral-wave-threshold-153/-/A-52399859

I actually think the room is crying out for more contrast so I would try something with jungle leaves or the like, but that's just me.

Consider a wall color that maintains the floor and tile look--Benjamin Moore Winthrop Peach, then accessorize. There are numerous shower curtains that are clear with black cityscapes on them that would provide some dramatic contrast without creating a cave like feel. If you paper consider using an open trellis design.

Thoughts on only wallpapering the arch over the toilet?

(The chain you see in the photo is the pull down for the skylight vent)

Over the tub? I am ambivilent. Wallpaper or paint is fine with me. I think it will depend on the wallpaper.

Are you using the tub a lot? I would love to see a clear frameless glass shower door to highlight the tile work in the tub area and get rid of the shower rod and curtain. It can be a pain if bathing little kids but would open up the space and give the room a clean look and let all that great tilework shine!

Personally, before wallpapering anything, I would get a new shower curtain in a wallpaperish pattern. Get a clear liner and a fabric curtain.

just for fun, here are a few images from archive.org showing this color (which they tended to call "Tuscan brown" or "autumn brown") as it was originally used:

I have no advice to offer, I just thought it was interesting to see how they used the color back in the day.

Any update on your bathroom, @suzchaps? Would love to see pics if you can share.

tartanmeup , thanks for your interest and followup! No update.... I think it's been hard for me to finish this bathroom because of the brown tones in the floor mixed with the light peach and black. I can't seem to integrate the two. I keep exploring the idea of using a peel and stick design for the floor.

Have you seen any you like? I've got contact paper on my laundry room vinyl floor so I'm not about to tell you it's a bad idea. :P Just make sure whatever you use doesn't make for a slippery floor.

Good tip! I've been browsing and looking at a variety. Do you have a brand to recommend?

Not really. Pretty sure the brand I used for my floor was Contact but it's a smooth vinyl. I did see they make some specifically for floors now. You might want to have a look at those.

Frankly, the tile looks earlier than mid-century, but it looks to be in perfect condition. I’d wait until I found the right peach color in a patterned wallpaper and then do the walls. Play up the peach. The gray dulls the peach.

We finally jazzed up this bathroom by giving attention to the floor! The brown tones in the original tiles were darkening and pulled you down, even though in perfect condition. The brown shades also clashed with the hints of black, in my opinion. Now we need to work on more storage in this space!

Looks nice. Did you keep your medicine cabinet mirror? I have pedestal sink in both hall and masterbath and manage to store everything needed in the mirror cabinets (+ a basket in hall bath). But they are both roomy. If this is not your primary bath, the don't over clutter with cabinets- shelves are fine.

Cool floor! I'd be tempted to get a white shower curtain with some hints of black in it. What type of storage do you need?

    suzchaps thanked tartanmeup

Gcubed yes we kept our medicine cabinet but still trying to figure out how to take off the mirror and replace it with a slim black trimmed mirror. The hinges are not your ordinary hinges which is part of the problem in removing it. This is our primary bathroom for the upstairs and we have a built in cabinet in the hallway where we keep some things. I am browsing for the right wall cabinet that we could hang over the toilet.

tartanmeup we need some storage for keeping brushes, my husband's electric razor, etc. Thought about removing the pedestal sink but the space between the wall and toilet on either side is quite small, thus trying to be creative in looking for storage ideas.

I'd be looking into shelving above the toilet or to the left of the mirror where you have the current pull out mirror.

    suzchaps thanked RL Relocation LLC

I wouldn't put a cabinet over the toilet. Shelves at most, and then some covered boxes for storage. What about a small storage box, unit in the corner left of pedestal. Maybe something rattan or wicker to bring in texture.

Pretty. We have 9 small bathrooms. A recesses shelf is the best storage, but of course, that is construction. When that’s impossible, we use wall mounted or floor mounted shelves. I’ll take some pictures. Brb.

Gcubed thank you. Currently we have a trash can to the left of the sink and a small wire shelf to the right (not shown in pictures when those were taken). I don't care for the wire shelf because I'd prefer not to see brushes, etc.

Here are small space storage solutions from my bed & breakfast inn and my own home.

    Floor caddy.

Glass shelves over tiny sink and toilet.

    Corner shelf.

    A couple more.

    Shelves recessed into the wall.

The over the toilet store bought solution.

    Glass shelf over tiny sink.

I like the style of that black and white towel, and also like the tropical art. a plain white shower curtain will work better IMO.

suggest: nylon shower curtain. you don't need a liner with them, and they can be bleached! I use hooks like this which makes them super easy to take off and on:

I forgot to say: those hooks are from Target! BB&B has a similar style with rollers, but they don't roll very well. may as well use the plain type, it'll look better and work the same!

Hi there, I don't know what the rest of your house looks like but my husband I are renovating our mid century and showing pictures and talking about here 'mid century home renovation:. (I think that's it) Anyway, we finished a bathroom although we're working on the outside and landscaping right now.

You may not want to hear this but our house was built in 1954 and it has that type of tile. One bathroom is a very soft pink and the other in a soft gray. We've kept the tile. I think the thing I find most out of character is the shape over the shower. That can't have been original was it? It looks like a drywall decision somebody made along the line. I would make that line straight again. I like the tile fine but the black border makes it a little harder to work with.

I'm not sure but have you checked to see if just the black border could be removed? They make some very cool new tile that goes really well with the vintage tile and you might find a bullnose tile to replace it with that you like.

Wallpaper is really in right now if that appeals to you but I actually just took some down. It was lovely William Morris paper but it was never right for the room. I got lucky and found a blog by a women who was redoing her pink bathroom and had tried dozens of pain colors...Literally. She finally said she just mixed one with about 100 times more white paint. She named the paint she mixed with white and when I saw it I thought it might work for out bathroom toned down even more.

We got lucky and got it dead on the first try. I'm so grateful for people that blog. Try looking at other people who are blogging about their peach mid century bathroom remodel.

In a perfect world I'd straighten the drywall above the shower, replace the black tile with a soft peach and cream and peach and white patterned border and then use paint in a very, very soft peach tint.

    Good luck..

The black border is perfectly in keeping with the style, and so is the three-angled arch over the tub. I wonder if this bathroom is a tad toward Art Deco, rather than simply MCM?

I love your new floor tiles and would do a recessed shelf if at all possible!

Love what you did with the floor! It brightens up the whole room. I would buy white towels with a black border and a similar shower curtain and call it DONE. You got several good ideas for more storage in there. Did you finally get one of the shelving units?
