What's going on with Houzz?????

last modified: 7 years ago

All of a sudden I stopped getting updates in my e-mail for comments on threads on my cell phone.

Then when I use the Houzz app, I can't even find the garden forums, I don't know how to comment because there is no option. I am just plain ole dumb!?

Does anyone know how to find these forums through their app?

How can one comment on a thread once it's found? It just shows me what I said and I can't even edit. I'm lost(

Seems the only place I find it easy is on the computer not my iphone.

The Houzz homepage is Houzz.com/products. Gardenweb is Houzz.com/discussions. If there’s a link on the Houzz.com/products homepage to the discussions, I can’t find it. So that’s maybe why you can’t get to the “Discussions” from your Houzz app. If you manually type Houzz.com/Discussions or Houzz.com/Discussions/Orchids into the your Browser-bar (NOT the Houzz Search Bar, that doesn’t work) then you can get there. This process takes me to the last Discussion Subject I posted on, which of course is “Orchids. But you also have the sidebar with all the other discussions available to choose from. It’s like Gardenweb discussion are Houzz “Part B” or something Still no clue about email notifications problem. Maybe we all have to reregister with a Houzz ID? Is everyone having this notification problem? You can click the “Bell” icon on either the Houzz.com/products homepage or the Houzz.com/Discussions page and see all of your “Notifications.”

just use gardenweb in the browser:

I just got an email notification when you commented petrushka. Maybe it is fixed? Mike, did you get any email notifications today?

Nancy, nothing. Not one e-mail notification. I just don't get it. What I do is go off and older post. I check my older e-mails click on that, then read the post and then get into Garden Web so I cam post post pictures easy from my phone. It's just a pain but it works.

Now, I will just have to keep up with any posts I have made or anything I participated in without missing any. If I do, oh well. I just don't know why it changed like that?

Over at Hot Topics, someone said they were hacked and many were compromised. Crazy. Maybe that has something to do with it...

    https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5615064/anyone-else-having-problems-with-houzz#n=13

I hope it all gets straightened out.

Looks like I am not getting notifications that someone thanked, liked, or posted.

John, thank you for all of that. It makes sense/.)))

Denise, thank you for that. Very important and I am glad you shared that. I didn't get one but for safety sake I just changed mines too.

Yikes! I just changed my password too. Thanks all.

Mike, did you check your email spam folder?

Also, in Advanced settings, I would try turning off the email notifications, hit update, and then turn them back on and hit update, maybe it will refresh your settings. Some servers take about 15 minutes to update the database.

Shortly, I'm going to try posting from an email, to see how you post MIke, to see if it's easier or tougher than through the app on my phone.

Wow posting from the email/browser link, I get to see all the past comments above whereas from the app I have to go from memory and wing it. Nice. Mike, I can see why you like this method of posting. I could also do more than 4 pics (I didn’t want to go too OT by posting more) and can type between pics now. Sweet.

ohh I can type here now

It won't show the 2nd photo I had attached above. grumble, grumble.

Sometimes the pics show up later and for me sometimes earlier posts show up later too. Welcome to the party.

Nancy, nice!!I will try that. And yes, SO MUCH easier! When you post pics, upload one, let it take, then hit post. Do this one at a itime. You can post upi to 6 pictures or more. It's so convenient!!

I will try that next time I want to do a long post :) I assume you hit the edit button and add another pic.

I never used the app - I tend to avoid most mobile apps unless I need it desperately. I like to keep my mobile devices pretty lean. Browser works fine for me and I have posted several pics in a single post - not recently though. Also I am a bit old school. I take pics with a camera and store them on my computer. And then upload to the post.

What are you testing nancy? After my post I see three one-liner post from you, then one from Mike and then two more from you? Is that what you are expecting? No pics though in case you posted pics too.

You may be interested in another related post on House plants forum too: https://www.houzz.com/discussions/houzz-message-board-issues-dsvw-vd~5612086?n=54 Emily from Houzz has responded once on that discussion.

we are playing with Mike's settings to try to get his emails to work. Thank you, no pics on these latest posts.

Now that I have to go through Houzz when I post , does anyone know how to ‘Edit’ a comment once you posted it?
I use to see the edit feature. No more.
Now it seems you have to tap on the bubble and the only option you get is to post a new comment. Ugh
Well I think I figured it out. I had to google garden forums and come in through the back Door.

Is there an easier way ? Is everyone here signed into Houzz? Where is the edit feature?

    Thank you

Nancy, thank you for all that work. Still no notificatiosn but I'll do. I will just have a good memory as to where I posted and keep up.

Mike, I have struggled to upload pics for two days! I upload the pics, press submit, and then it just vanishes! So aggravating!

I've given up also. I still get notifications from the Home side but nothing from Orchids or any garden forum.

I gave the app a try but could not find the gardenweb forums. There is no way to get to it so I deleted the app.

I tried John B's. method by typing the address in my browser and I finally found it. However, I'm typing now on my computer! I haven't been able to post photos at all because my phone will not upload pictures to my computer. So, I'm going to attempt to post a few photos by using my phone since I found the forums on the phone by typing the address in.

Have no idea what's going on. I did hear on CNBC that Houzz is having some financial troubles and may discard gardenweb. So maybe that is whats going on.

They are primarily a site for selling services for home products. The gardenweb forums do not bring in any money.

jane: I did hear on CNBC that Houzz is having some financial troubles and may discard gardenweb.

I looked for that news you mentioned but could not find. Do you have a link?

one cumbersome way of xfer of pics from phone for upload: send yourself a small size pic from phone to your e-mail. then open it on laptop/computer and save it ...then you can upload it thru gardenweb using houzz-photo button (do a browse, find it on the drive and upload).

In my case I no longer get notifications of postings on threads I have posted. I just check all the new stuff added since my last visit.

    tropic - I found this recent article - https://techcrunch.com/2019/01/29/houzz-layoffs/

It may be related to them preparing to go public (IPO), although haven't heard mention about the fate of GW - at least from that link.

Those of us who have been on GW from the Spike days have watched the site go from him (including affiliation with That Home Site) to iVillage, and finally to Houzz. I have been posting here since the late '90s (where Spike setup a more formalized database-configured account system that was officially implemented before the end of 2001 - had to sign up in the new system by December 2001 IIRC). There is so much institutional knowledge here that it would be a huge loss.

As a sidenote, it was some of us fervent fans who wanted to keep the posting format similar to what you see today - which is more "'90s old school" than what is normally seen in discussion forum/BBS software nowadays.

GW itself is not a money maker for Houzz but I guess some members straddle both aspects of Houzz. GW probably serves to bump up their user base that can be attractive for investors.

I did not get the notifications on this thread after my last post. Sometimes old notifications appear days later though.

For a brief time, GW offered paid subscriptions, which helped to bring in some revenue to maintain the site. In fact, if you subscribed (and/or gave a donation) they would send you Gardenweb business cards, a bumper sticker and/or a T-shirt (depending on how much you gave them). I had kept the old T-shirt for years and I think I finally wore it out and tossed it some time ago. lol

One of the things I noticed is that they seemed to have converted the GW membership database in order to merge it with the Houzz one, and after doing so, the old GW profile narratives (if you had one) and membership stat (from the original GW members) no longer display in the "Public" profile (although the field is still there for the "About Me" if you want to edit it).

Interesting Jenny. I think I officially joined in 2010. Before that I used to lurk around a bit here and there. Hopefully this board will survive. Or may be we should start thinking of 'building' an alternate one :)

You can post 6 meg pics of your citrus story here https://permies.com/t/20777/Cold-hardy-citrus-trees

I hope this board will survive too. But I have a feeling that with face book now and groups that you can be a part of the desire to kep this broard is going to fall by the wayside. Now you can join a 'citrus group' via face book which a few that use to come here now belong to. It really stinks. I miss the old style and old days.

Stll not getting e-mail notifications. Use to be so much easier to keep up(

Never been on Facebook and very likely never will be. For me GW and few other (bonsai, etc) forums is enough social media for me.

    I don't get this...

Why does it say "refresh page" error has occured when I post, then when I go back, it posted anyways??????

Then, here is a good one.

I finally got a response from Houzz, and they told me to do exactly what I did to get notifications, and still nothing@!!! Whata joke.

    Concern:

I think we should all consider creating or at least geting each others e-mail, at least for those who care enough to be friends or part of each other, before this one disappears...What do you think?

    MIke

I agree, though I suspect we will find each other to a degree on other boards, like the tropical fruit board forum citrus section, which covers many of the same topics, though seems to have more international membership.

I do not want to lose track of everyone here.. We need to find an alternative. I know some of you don’t do FB ....I don’t much either, but it is handy for creating private groups. We could resort to that, or anyone handy with web site creation? :)

Hey all, Are you still having issues getting notifications? If so, please shoot us a message through help.houzz.com and let us know!

I like Laura’s idea. Maybe we could do that. Does everyone have a Facebook account? We could set one up. Not sure how new people would find us?

    Jane

Tropic. I heard it probably 4-6 months ago. I think it was an interview with the CEO of Houzz by Jim Cramer. She was a young, Asian woman. She was talking about how successful Houzz has been bringing in money through their website. She mentioned how there were things they would change and improve. Anything that didn’t drive income would be dropped or changed. My thoughts was Gardenweb. Not sure if she mentioned it specifically. My thinking is if they don’t integrate Gardenweb into Houzz, they will drop it. They are totally focused on home improvement and leading people to their contractors.

I'm looking into some options...stay tuned.

I may have a friend create a forum just for us...still working on it. It will not rival Houzz in its size or scope, but it can be a place for us so we don’t lose contact in case this section goes.

My comment from a post disappeared, then reappeared after I typed up another one!!

Mike, click the "Your Houzz" in the top right and then "Edit Profile" and then "Advanced Setting" It will give a list of when you want to be contacted.
