cool space. are you keeping those light wood country looking dining chairs? I think you know that they do not go w/your rather contemporary decor!

as for the stools, comfort is an issue w/the low backs. have you sat in one for any length of time?

since your island is dark, I probably wouldn't pic a dark seat. Do you like something like this?

I like a traditional DR chair that has a back that is high enough for support but not so high that serving or removing plates would be ridiculous.

I am just interested in purchasing dining chairs, but cannot decide on high or low back.

With your table and space limitations, my criteria would be that the legs splay as little as possible, that there are no arms, that the back isn't curved and that they all tuck in as close to the table as possible. I don't care for benches, but if you only usually seat four, or have children, perhaps a bench on the window side would be better.

we usually eat at the island. so
comfortable stools there is a must.
When we entertain, the island often becomes a serving bar or buffet. I can move the stools to the porch.
Your dining area is rather narrow, so I would look for smaller, straighter leg modern chairs. A bench could work on one side, but that's really a matter of taste. I really dislike sitting on benches.

We eat all of our meals at the table ....not a couples home..lol....two out of five children home and three dogs.....lol...we also use island for buffet style eating when everyone is home. I am really looking for info to make decision for high back or low back dining chairs. Thanks for reply!

It’s all about comfort don’t pick anything based on looks. Been there done that .
Sit in the chairs, a mid to high back chair might be the best option. Also depends if you are a sit around after eating to chat, or is it sit down to eat them move to other areas of the house after. So what I’m saying is do not focus on height, focus on comfort then form.
