We are working though the floor plan and build estimate of a new build. We have an 18x18 great room that will have a door to one side of the fireplace leading out to the screen porch. The screen porch will have access to the pool/patio/yard, but it is not intended to be the primary access to those areas.

The architect originally had a carpet inset with wood floors around, to allow a wood path to door. We feel that makes the carpeted space too defined and think we’d rather have wood floors and put a rug in the room, but honestly, every option has its drawbacks. Our current family room has wall to wall carpet, and as we are sitting on it tonight playing with the dog, we wonder if we should just do that and put a rug by the door and deal.

Option 1) carpet inset with wood around
Option 2) all wood with large rug (likely an edged carpet)
Option 3) wall to wall carpet, accepting there were will be extra wear in and out of that door
