Is the mirror too low??

I don't love how the faucet is higher than the mirror, but if we move the mirror up then my littles can't see into the mirror at all. (They can reach faucet to use the sink, but can't see into mirror without a step stool, and there's really not enough room to leave a step stool in there.) It also puts the light fixture pretty high up, which is maybe ok. Just wondering what y'all think? This leaves room for two tile high backsplash, by the way. I was a little torn on the mirror, but kinda gave up on finding one that was perfect. This one was cheap and "good enough" so please don't tell me get a different mirror lol!! If I have to keep shopping that means this room can't get done any time soon, aka can't get done today and we really need it done!

Next issue. So here it is 3 tiles up, clears the faucet. But it’s so thick that the light fixture doesn’t sit off it.

I understand you don't have time to find another mirror right now. can you remove the frame from this one? frameless would look fine here and be the easiest solution. be sure to hang it in a way that can be easily removed in case you do stumble across something better one day.

B F - that’s a good question. I’m not sure how we’d hang it if we take the outer frame off. I asked my husband about removing the back half to make stick out less far but the back piece is what’s holding it all together. If we take the whole thing off I wonder if/how we could hang it...

Perhaps a slightly different style would work better? Your room looks a bit more elegant than the lighting choice? That looks kind of "industrial"? Can't see really well.

If you want more industrial, then look for a mirror with a darker framing.

I looove the light though :) the mirror I am fine with but can’t say I love it.
The more I look at it, the more I think even apart from the sizing, the mirror is just the wrong style. Sigh.

mshutterbug - framess mirrorrs are hung with brackets around the edges, such as this. since yours is small, you won't need more than 4 I think. easily purchased at a hardware store.

We might be able to use some of the leftover cabinet molding pieces (just flat 4” pieces) and make a simple mirror... ?

oh also: do try to put it as high as you and your kids can manage. my mirror is hung slightly behind the faucet, and water splashes on it every day. we're just two relatively tidy adults using it, I can't even imagine how bad that would get with kids. those suggestions posted above -- where the frame is also made of mirrors -- would not do well in my bathroom.

Now THAT is an excellent point! Definitely a vote for hanging it higher! My hubs says that if I like the frame he could take the back parts off and just mount it all to a thin board to keep it all together. So now I’m asking myself...do I not like the style or do I just not like that the light fixture can’t protrude beyond it. Thoughts? Here it is higher up. I’m thinking the style doesn’t work. I had that thought shortly after I bought it but cabinets etc weren’t installed yet so I was hoping it’d work once I saw it all lol
  • 7 years ago

Could you make a pallet/white wood base for under the light fixture so it mounts on that as well as the wall?

I am not crazy about that light fixture. I would do a chrome to work with faucet.

Might be hard to tell but the fixture actually is shiny chrome :) I just had him put it back up in the same space where the old one was. I think it’s at a good height so maybe I should look for a mirror at a size that fits within this space?? Maybe square?

oh, I didn't even notice that problem with the light fixture. if you are not feeling it, then don't keep it! is there any way you can temporarily hang the mirror until you find a better one? (as in, don't do anything that might make that mirror permanent?) return it when you put in a new one.

a frameless mirror will sit flat to the wall and work fine with that light fixture. it'll be easier to clean too!

Another view. So unfortunately we can’t hang the mirror and have the light fixture because the mirror is so tall that it would have to almost sit on the countertop, but is too thick to clear the faucet. Do you think maybe a square mirror would be good?
Edit: in other words we’d have to move the light fixture up in order to put the mirror there even temporarily. And we’d rather only move the fixture once :) we’ve been without a mirror for over 6 months so what’s a little longer. Irony, I started out saying I don’t want to change the mirror and now I’m thinking I do want to change the mirror lol! But to what?

(And easier to clean is definitely speaking my language! With 3 kids I’m all about easier to clean!)

yes, I think a square mirror would. if you're worried about the backsplash, you can always add that in later, after you find the right mirror!

things that you think are going to be so easy never are, right?

I see a hexagon window. Maybe get a mirror that repeats that shape.
Hang the mirror vertically...low enough for the littles and high enough for the bigs.

it's an octagon. I honestly would think an octagonal mirror would look really cool, but only if you styled the whole bathroom in a CB2 kind of way (like, funky retro 80s). I feel like what the op is going for is more like modern farmhouse.

PS: the first mirror posted below this is not an octagon, it's a hexagon. the window in the op's bathroom has 8 sides. it would introduce a whole new shape in that room. but I do like the rustic style!

mshutterbug how funny, I think our messages are out of sync. since you waited 6 months, maybe you can wait a little longer for just the right mirror. sorry, I know how frustrating it can be when you're so close to finishing!

Get a stand mirror for the kiddos to see themselves in and a hex mirror for the wall. You can also put a mirror on the back of the closet door so the kids can see themselves from head to toe.

Thanks everyone! You got it B F...definitely dig a more modern farmhouse look. I am not a fan of the window actually. (Several funky angles in this house, but everything else about it, especially location, was great so we went for it). Yeah I think I can wait longer to find just the right mirror or at least one that works better! At least as of today we now have a towel ring and toilet paper holder :D And as for the youngest family members, I can actually just get an extra step stool and store it under the sink. So I’m not gonna stress about whether they can see in the mirror from the floor. It would be ideal, but all things considered, not a dealbreaker.
Prior to today we just had the towel laying on the counter and the tp sitting loose on the back of toilet lol! So even without a mirror this feels much more finished. Planning to do simple white subway backsplash but kinda wish I’d just run the countertop up the wall so that piece would be done. Now to choose a better mirror!

What do you guys think of a mirror that is a similar shade as my hardwood flooring, not necessarily this one but something like it? Or should I stick with white or gray or ..?
  • PRO
You could. Just have to get right size And this is challenging. A wider frame makes for difficulties with height and width. Do you have outlet on that wall?
  • PRO
Take blue painter tape and outline shape that would best fit. Then measure that inside edge and keep whatever size or shape you get to that shape. Go see what Hobby Lobby has in light woods and you can stain to color you want. Get when mirrors go on 50% off sale or use their app for weekly coupon for 40% off. The have wood and metal framed mirrors and many farmhouse styles if that is your goal.
No outlet on the wall. The width of countertop is 37” and if I leave the light fixture where it is and position the mirror above the top of faucet I have about 30-32” available for height.
  • PRO
Ok you probably want either square 30” or 24-28” wide and 28-30 high total. You need a nice 4” border around mirror.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but why not turn the mirror sideways?

Thanks sandesurf! Good thinking! Unfortunately the mirror is a little too tall to turn sideways...
Well here’s where we’re at today. Hubs found this square white mirror half off on a Home Depot run and I’m tired of searching so I said go for it. The white isn’t quite the right shade so I’m considering getting some chalk paint and trying to make it a light charcoal color (darker than the wall, but not so dark it looks black.) Whaddyou guys think? (We still need to tile behind the faucet, which will be white subway with light gray grout. Speaking with f which - should I tile only the back wall or side too?? Seriously wish I’d just had them do the standard countertop backsplash lol) I think I need a new soap dispenser too because this one looks really dingy with the chrome light and other chrome fixtures.

It’s ok. You don’t look like there is enough space behind the faucet for your countertop type backsplash. Thin subway will work but you will also need top and side border. Schulter or thin pencil. I think i would look for one that had bullnose tile so you limit edging issue.
Thanks Flo! We have the tile already and there’s plenty of room behind the faucet for it :)

    I love the square mirror!

Thanks grdnbeth! I’m much happier with the way this one fits in the room :) now to decide if I want to paint it gray. I might leave it until the tile is done and then decide.
