So where do you live now? Apparently in the cold zones?

Moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Not very far north of where I was but to a much higher elevation. We only left the mountains for my husband's PHD. My bonsai and my orchids are mostly much happier up here (tons of humidity) but not my adeniums - not without a greenhouse to put them into so I'm working on that. Be a while yet.

Gesneriads (many) won't be quite as happy either. It's all tradeoffs though. You can have rhodos and mountain laurel now I guess :)

It's true that my African Violets didn't like over wintering in a basement while I sort out where they would eventually end up after unpacking. However, most of my gesneriads are doing pretty well. Now that I'm caught up on repotting before Christmas and am now doing a second repotting/dividing, everything is really starting to look good again! And of course I have a lot of seedlings coming up from my hybridizing. Most of my gesneriad collection are streptocarpus and they love the cooler damp mountain air far better than the heat of Georgia.

So far my Sinningia, Kohlera, and Corytoplectus cutucuensis are doing well (the latter protected from winter heating that dries the air out) but you are right alas that my episcia mostly didn't make it through the transitions. They are finally looking better now that spring is creeping up on us.

Mine looks more like death this year than ever before (Episcia). The Streps are happy with their cool porch, though growth while stronger is also slower. AVs are blooming now (spring fling). My Chirita tamiana (no one tell me what the current name is..I don't care..this poor plant has been renamed too many times) is ready for me to do something with it (despite rumors of being short lived, my pot has is now on it's sixth year). I want do some propagation and thicken the stand and put in a shallow bowl for display.

Yes, I'm not very happy with Houz and miss the old GardenWeb a lot. Thankfully there are other good places I hang out a lot more than here. BonsaiNut, Facebook, etc. Still, the Adenium thread here has good people on it that I enjoy keeping up with while I putter along. Good to see you are still here, Roger. I always enjoy your posts! I love my tamiana! I like planting an entire flat of seed and planting it out beneath my shady, mossy trees and letting them bloom their brains out with a carpet of white flowers. Then they die off for the winter and I can do it all over again. I also like planting out flats of strep seedlings into my garden (shady places) and only digging up and keeping the rare seedling that is outstanding. Better than 90 percent of my seedlings are not keepers anyway but they sure brighten up the garden with their blooms and produce a zillion seedpods I can send to friends who want to try them as outdoor annuals.

I managed to keep a few of my epsicia alive. My hope is once things get settled better here I can keep a few going nicely. I'm worried about my Cleopatra and I don't think the last two are going to make it. If not, I'll have to replace it as it's a favorite. My Pink Smokes have hung on for I sealed them up into baggies for the move and over wintering. Once it warms up they'll love it up here - at least until next winter. Then back into a terrarium they'll go. My micro sinningia and other sinnies are doing just fine. None of my pollination attempts have taken over winter or early spring though - air is just too dry inside of the house with the furnace running. But soon that won't be an issue. I may have lost two of my tropical hibiscus but I'll replace them if need be.

Always a shakeup when you move a large plant collection to a very different environment. I downsized a huge amount though. I went from about 3 to 4 thousand indoor plants (mostly genseriads) to around a thousand or less currently. About 200 of those are Adeniums, some are seedling trays, etc.

Hey Hyn, glad you're back. Better losing your account than loosing plants. I lost over 2/3's of my plants in a moving/cold spike incident. I guess on a positive note it leaves me a lot of space to start over.

How are you liking North Carolina compared to Georgia?

Welcome back! I lost all my mini violets once when I had to move from FL to SC. They just didn't like the hot, dry winter air at all, even though I did everything I could to give them the humidity they craved. You're lucky to have been able to save yours.

I had to block Houzz emails from Gmail, so I know they don't automatically block them. I still get the notifications that I want. That's just strange.

Well, they are definitely blocking the Houz /automated/ password reset emails. All other messages from Houz come through to my Gmail account just fine. There's a big difference. I couldn't even get a /reply/ from Google about it much less any help and I sent several help requests and asked on the Gmail forum. Houz at least answered my mail telling me they couldn't do anything to fix it.

I am so sorry to hear you lost so many. I have lost quite a few myself - but I have also been working on downsizing my collection a great deal. And I plan to downsize a lot more yet. I want to focus more on my outdoor plants and keep my indoor plants down to just two plant stands, plus a propagation stand (mostly for starting seeds for outdoors). It's just too much work and my husband and I want to travel a lot more. I also need to focus a lot more time and attention on my art studio - which includes getting back into making bonsai pots.
