I'm looking to replace my 30" Bluestar gas range with a duel fuel Thor from Costco. Does anyone have any insight as to the performance of the Thor brand? Here are the specs of the range I am looking at.

76.2 cm (30 in.) 118.9 L (4.2 cu. ft.) Oven:

  • Electric broiler wattage: 1 x 3000 W
  • Electric bake wattage: 1 x 800 W (top) and 1 x 2500 W (base)
  • Black porcelain oven interior
  • Commercial convection fan
  • 2 halogen lights
  • Thermostatically controlled to attain the right oven temperature
  • Oven electrical requirements: 240 V/60 Hz/30 A

Specifications:

  • Dimensions (W x D x H): 76.20 cm x 69.85 cm x 99.06 cm (30 in. x 27.5 in. x 39 in.)

I do know Thor is a top brand-and Costco stands behind most their products quite nicely.

    Hope this helps :)

I am currently looking for a range too. I was very seriously considering a Thor. But have read quite a few negative reviews regarding early issues and trouble getting service under the warranty. I hope some people respond on here who actually own one. The price is great.

I am not familiar with the brand, but am just commenting that is a good lookin' range!

Ditto what Patricia said. Thor is made in China. Can it be serviced in your locale?

If you like the IR broiler on the Bluestar you will be disappointed with the wimpy broiler on the Thor.

Is this Costco Canada or UK? I can't find the Thor at the US Costco site.

@nosoccermom it is at Costco Canada. On sale until March 6.

@ Patricia Colwell Consulting, our experience with Bluestar has been negative. We purchased a 2018 range that was plagued with all the "old" issues. Hot door, burners that didn't light or extinguish correctly, constant banging sounds in the oven cavity and more...

Have you read the reviews at Home Depot, Costco?

Have you found an experienced service technician in your area? That might be worth your efforts. Your problems with the Bluestar burners sound like the type of problem that happens with poor installation. There are a couple of parameters (e.g. Venturi shutters) that need to be adjusted based on your altitude and based on your gas pressure. A good installer will set all these things correctly and/or make sure you weren't sold an appliance that was configured for the wrong environment (e.g. there have been people who received stoves set for propane, when they wanted to use natural gas).

Also, the igniter electrodes need to be positioned correctly. It's an easy adjustment, but it is possible they shifted since they left the factory. And you need to make sure that the igniter cables don't touch metal parts. They can otherwise spark against the chassis instead of against the burner heads ... and that of course defeats their purpose. Easy to fix with a zip tie. Your installer should have tested this.

The banging sounds from the oven are a different issue. I think, in the past, people narrowed it down to an incorrectly installed heat spreader. Your service technician should verify that theory and request a replacement part from Bluestar. Some limited amount of clicking sounds are normal with any gas oven. Banging isn't.

Also, the Bluestar manual tells you to never use the broiler during pre-heat or when the convection fan is on. That can cause unburned gas to accumulate and eventually combust explosively. Of course, people tend to forget. That's why Bluestar currently has a recall going on that provides you with an additional relay for the fan. Once installed, this relay prevents you from accidentally running the broiler in a way that isn't safe. You should probably contact Bluestar and ask them about the recall, if you haven't done so yet.

Bluestar makes some amazing rock solid appliances. They use proven old-school mechanical technology. But sometimes that also means that they need a knowledgeable technician to set everything up the first time round. And yes, some people have bad luck, and something is genuinely broken. That does happen on occasion.

My friend bought a Thor less than a year ago and he’s had to have it serviced three times because the oven stopped working. I’m unsure of the model, but can inquire if you’d like to know

There are alot more choices for ranges than one made in China and IMO the first thing you better check is the service for the appliance you are buying. I have a Bertazzoni I love and in a 30” was about the same price with a service teck that can be called even in my small town in BC IMO Bluestar would be many steps up from what you are considering and as mentioned maybe read the instruction manual again for the Bluestar and see if your problems can be rectified .

@Patricia Colwell Consulting, I'm very afraid if my Bluestar is a step up from a Thor! What else is in the same price range that has good customer service?
