Having a trellis will increase your chances of the rose surviving, and it helps that you'll have middle and late afternoon shade. Reve d'Or is another beautiful rose, but against a red brick wall a lighter-colored rose might be prettier. I also suggest Casino, a beautiful yellow rose that is not grown often enough. I've had it in the past and it is lovely.

We have a big South-facing wall, and in the past we have had roses do very well, now -- but as our climate has gotten hotter, roses have really struggled there. At this point, I'm putting succulents in that area!

Thank you, Jeri! I have read several threads about the heat and walls, so I have concerns too. I was just hoping that our humidity and summer cloud coverage would give the roses a winning edge.

I think I also need something pretty leafy, to protect the canes from sunburn? Which of these is leafiest? I think I read somewhere about GdD being naked-legged?? So, I think I’m leaning towards Lamarque now.

We only have one brick wall where the fireplace is. I have Cecil Brunner Spray there. It gets afternoon shade. It flowers and does just fine. It will get big! There is also a climbing version as well.

That does make sense...thank you Sultry! Ok, so maybe this is a good spot for the blackspottiest rose? Maybe GdD? I could always grow something to skirt her I suppose. I’m thinking maybe I put them all in their pots over there and just see how they respond. :-)

Perma, I've read in several places that people who grow GdD routinely grow short shrubs or roses at its base because it's so very leggy. In that respect Reve d'Or is superior, I think.

That is a good idea about putting the pots near the wall and see what looks good and what responds good. I have done that with potted roses and other plants that are fussy or I wasnt sure exactly how much sun/shade they wanted. I can think of a few Divas (Yes, You, Evelyn!) I did that with lol.

Hi Ingrid, I just now saw this thread and have questions and ask for suggestions. I want to plant a climber/short rambler on our west facing brick wall - the house is brick 3/4 way up, then wood on the 2nd storey. It gets nearly all day sun, very hot in summer. I want to have an Old-World, English roses-dripping-off-the wall look. Is there a rose out there that could withstand this site and still look good? I would, of course, love one that would repeat bloom and is very disease free. I am in zone 8b, wet in spring and winter and hot/dry in summer. What I don't want is to have a poor rose fry in these conditions and look sad and miserable in the summer heat and in the pouring spring rains we have here. Would Reve d'Or stand up to these conditions in your opinion? The brick is a rusty/coppery color and I think yellow would be lovely. Hubby will build a trellis to hold the rose out a bit from the surface of the brick. Thanks for your help, I would love suggestions from anyone who can help me make a wise choice, not only about Reve d'Or but any others that might qualify. Thanks so much, Crow

I would plant as far forward of the hot wall if you want to give the plants a chance. Hosing them down during hot spells could help (in addition to drip irrigation), and/or a shade cloth.

Hi Sheila, thanks so much for your comment on my questions, I very much appreciate it. I will bite the bullet and just do it, if it does not work at least I can say I tried. I have ordered Reve d'Or hoping that being an antique rose which has grown and thrived in tough conditions without care that it might survive my site. Thanks for your suggestion of planting far out, I have read to plant at least two feet away from the wall which I will do. If it works, I will post some photos here in the next couple of years. Fingers crossed!
