Normally I'd side on function, but no way would I have one of those couches in my house. They are just big, bulky and ugly.

I just googled white reclining sofas and tons of them came up. Some better than others but maybe, a way to define your mutual expectations before you go to stores ... because the pitfall is that they are indeed, very comfortable and that sometimes seduces buyers who then end up with massive oversized furniture that they have to try to fit into their spaces. Measure and decide on a size and then you'll have ammo to say no to an option like this because .... "but it's so comfortable." Good luck!
