Kitchen, What do I change?

This is listing photo... so furnishings and accessories are not here. I am having a hard time deciding on wall color that looks good with the floors, cabinets the counters and the backsplash. The grey green walls are darker in person and id like to lighten them. Cabinets are in great shape and were painted this dark grey brown... Do those need to change too?

Ive never had such indecision about decor than I do with this house. It’s a challenge!

I feel like the current wall color is fighting the tones in the kitchen. I really like the second image/color groveraxle posted. A light beige or warm greige looks great. Beautiful kitchen! I would just try some paint and not change anything else yet.

I'd go with something like BM Wyndham Cream or SW Creamy.

Or try BM Gray Mirage, kind of gray/green, or BM Balboa Mist.

However, so much depends on the light in your rooms.

Thank you all for the input.

I do have a sample can of agreeable grey I will paint a big swatch after we get back from vacation And post it to see what you think. Thank you for showing all the mock ups... I know for sure I'm not a fan of the purple or yellow, and like the lighter tones. I agree the warmth of the backsplash stands out but it also ties in the floors.

Light fixture could be replaced, it is a bit modern compared to the rest of our things. The one thing I do like about it is it follows the L shape of the counters. Not sure how pendant lights would work there. Any suggestions appreciated.

My three favorites are groveeraxles second picture. ( can you share color?) clererygirls lighter taupe and her greige. YOu guys are amazing! Thank you!,

Kris, I have no idea what color that is in my second rendering. I just manipulate colors till I get something I like. But I can tell you I was aiming at the lightest stone in your backsplash.

No one has mentioned how expensive and difficult it is to get a clean coat of durable paint on installed cabinets. If you don't dislike the cabinet color, your life will be easier keeping them as they are until they really require refinishing.

Hi , Kris. Your kitchen is really nice. To lighten/brighten it and to really show off some of the elements ( stone splash, granite counters and warm wood floors ) , if it were mine I would paint the walls a warm white - ( WHITE, not beige ). I think that would freshen things up and allow all the warm tones to come forward in contrast more. — Then I would replace the rug with a more serious one like the red oriental below. You have the perfect k. configuration with the big open space in the middle for a “wow” punch -of- color rug. This one has the golden tan colors of the stone and the lighter beige of your counters. Even though it has an overall pattern, I don’t think it would fight with your beautiful stone wall , as I feel your current rug does.—- Then ,to provide balance , I would add drapery with pattern and color at the large window in the dining portion . I got a bit inspired by your rooster , in that this beautiful large plaid would be very French inspired . Or maybe this red and white lattice drapery - just something to bring more life to that side of the room and tie it in to all the color and texture on the other side.

Here is an inspiration picture to show how lovely white walls can be with stone, cream/golden/tan colors, natural wood ( like your floors) , darker cabinetry, and a punch of red. —- BTW, I just reread your post and realized the rooster is not yours, lol.- nor is the rug - I overlooked that the first time, haha. —Beautiful stove and hood too , Kris ! Lucky you !

Personally, I dislike overly busy splash backs and think that small patterned, highly textured ones are impractical. There is too much movement for the eye, no where to rest. The shades in the stacked stone (or whatever it is) do not match/go well with the cabinetry shades either. Just not working as far as I can see. They lack cohesiveness, harmony and a sense of flow/belonging together.

Also, the cabinets and wall colours seem a little drab and dreary for the amount of light pictured. Dated too. Mission brown anyone?

For me, the splashback would be gone, cabinets repainted (lighter) and walls lighter also. But, that’s just me. (Hate an overly busy splashback!)

I'm surprised no one has commented on this yet; while I love the rooster I think it needs a new home. I hate things on top of cupboards. to me that screams 80's

Melissa, rooster is at the old owners new home. This a listing photo (because the colors show better than pics i take). We didn’t negotiate to keep the rooster when we closed.

Nicci, we do love the stove and hood! You are right the window area has nothing to draw the eye, except luckily a great view! We have A dining table there now, and I agree window treatment could help pull things together. A few considerations... the adjacent open rooms have navy accents, I’m not a fan of plaid, and most challenging for me is the wall that is unseen in the dining area is a sliding glass door that opens to a covered deck. How would you address three unique windows In such a small area? Should I just dress the big window and leave the other two bare?

The stacked stone backsplash hasn’t been a problem to clean —but I do see it is warmer than the rest. My guess is it would be the least expensive replace if something has to go.

Kris, as others have said, I like the stone backsplash and the greige color Celery Girl showed. Still like white walls, too. I would live with everything for a while and just add fabric and wall paint color before removing anything.—- As to the window treatments ,my thought had been to do stationary panels at the sides of the large windows and leave the small upper windows open, but could you take a picture of the whole room with all of its windows and doors ? Also, the room to which this kitchen opens ? I understand your wanting things to be cohesive . I hadn’t realized the kitchen is open , so a picture of how it relates to other rooms would be helpful. —- Enjoy your vacation.

Here is your kitchen with a new, more neutral splash. I also removed the rug. I don't know when rugs in a kitchen became a thing.

Yes, it’s that stone backsplash that is throwing off the whole design...

Nicole, I’ll try and take a picture after work while hubby is loading the car.

Groveraxle- as always love seeing your suggestions. We don’t have a carpet in the kitchen now- with Two dogs it’s easier to have washable throw rugs.

And a broader view taken from kitchen into living/dining. French doors you see go to the library which we've painted navy. Wall color in real life is darker and makes me feel like I'm in an institution. Fireplace is going to be changed.

Im thinking all of the walls should be a white or greige...???

Back from an amazing ski trip! Have a painter lined up.

Here’s a better current photo of eat in area off kitchen.

looking for advice on if you would do kitchen and adjacent rooms all the same color or would it be better to have coordinating colors?

Everything looks very colorful. I would replace the tile on the wall and the floor with something less variegated. It can be cold or warm shades. How do you think about the combination of light yellow and blue look with these gray cabinets?

    The decision is on you.

Don’t start making changes until you have lived with this kitchen for at least three months. As pictured, it is beautiful.
Surely there is another room or issue which has a higher priority on the change list.
Meanwhile, buy yourself a color fan deck from your preferred paint store and a package of sticky-tabs to mark colors which interest you for your future projects.
If the kitchen colors are darker or different from your favorite or preferred colors, you can pick some possible colors for walls and cabinets for a change in the future.

I like the cabinets! I’d suggest a warm peach for the wall color. If you get a sunrise and sunset reflection against that wall, it will be your favorite room I’m in the house. It would look great with the floor and backsplash colors, and hopefully the cabinets too.

Thank you all for recent responses. Ive lived here for over a year and for sure need to change the depressing wall color soon. I like the previous mock ups with light neutrals and looking at samples to decide what looks best. My current question is do I do the kitchen area the same as living, dining hall and entry since they all flow together or would you do coordinating neutrals?

If paint doesn’t help I think backsplash is the thing that needs to be replaced.

If you like the color in the other areas just paint the kitchen, dining area a coordinating color. Paint everything if you really don't like the color. And you are right changing the backsplash might be the answer. the color doesn't really work but it's the texture I couldn't live with in my kitchen

I really want to get rid of all of the cement green-grey That is on ALL of the walls. It looks very institutional at night. I’m just having a tough time selecting a color that works with everything. I keep liking white rooms.. but was hoping not to have to repaint the woodwork.

So here are current pictures sans rooster.. the rooster did a good job of hiding the light cord.

‘Another question... the corner glass front cabinet has a warm wood ( darker and a bit more red than the floors ) in the back. Would you Keep it. Paint it? If paint to the new wall color?

Black + white+ wood is trending right now. I would leave all the cabinets as is and paint all the walls a bright white. I saw on another thread that people are painting or white washing stone. I think a whitewash on your backsplash is something to consider...

    Kris Bruesehoff thanked Amanda Smith

Amanda Although the cabinets look black in this picture they are really a grey brown. I don’t think I want to paint/whitewash the stone backsplash, but I may consider replacing it. Do you think a light neutral or white paint would look good if everything else stays the same?

Would you paint or leave the inside of the glass cabinet?!

I would paint the inside of the glass cabinet the same white as the walls. If you are considering taking out the backsplash why not first attempt a whitewashing? You have nothing to lose.

I suppose you are right about whitewashing the back splash... nothing to lose but time.

‘My hope is it looks ok with different wall paint....

‘so I saw one photo of mirrors on inside of a display cabinet... too much drama?

Here is tile that is similar to your backsplash. I think it looks great with a bright white paint next to it. I would paint all the walls white, then see how you are feeling about the stone tile.

Check out SW Creamy or BM Capitol White. Both are warm whites but certainly not beige. I have Creamy in south and north facing rooms, and it's definitely a clear, warm white.

Definitely paint the walls. I like warm grays but your walls are cool and too depressing. I can understand why it feels institutional. I think a light beige or greige (check out accessible beige and wool skein), or a soft white would look great and feel so much better to be surrounded by.
