Guessing the problem is more electrical than structural. With some finished wood panels, or even some pipe fittings (all the rage) and some brackets - you could build a false soffit to house the electrical and mount any type fixture underneath. Did a little section sketch for you, but would probably need to see more to come up with the best solution. Good luck & have fun.

Here's the floorplan of my kitchen. Cant change anything at this point since walls are already up and painted and we are days away from final inspection. So the kitchen area was bumped out a bit for the nook, and the support beam is pretty much where the rest of the house ends.

But yes, I was wondering if they could build me some sort of small drop down thing to hide the electrical...I'll ask my electrician about that today! Thanks Build beautiful.

Depending on how the circuit is set up, a pancake electrical box may work. They are very shallow and may work in your situation. It really depends on how many wires there are in the box.

The electrician said they can't touch the support beam, at least until after we pass inspection, and then he said we can try to do "something", but we haven't really discussed what that "something" is! We did discuss at rough in, but they just said we'll pass inspection first and then figure out a work around....

Get an inspection, send a photo when it's over. If the ceiling joists are exposed, see if you can get the GC to put some plywood up there, something you can screw into later (but not an absolute necessity).

What was the solution? I am having the same issue - In the middle of my table there is a steel beam. Anybody have any ideas?

Fur the ceiling down and use a shallow box.
