I'd opt for a sisal stair runner with a black 2-3" tape border on either side, and you can have an area rug made out of the same materials.

I think the black trim will coordinate well with the painted elements of your stairs and your front doors.

it's off topic but I would remove the mirror. My husband just took a terrible fall down the stairs. If there had been a mirror his injuries would have been much worse.
