I ripped out all my landscaping last fall. I liked it better after the overgrown bushes were taken away. The landscape designer at the nursery put only dwarf plant in the new plan. I will be planting in April.

You can now see the stone on the pillars. The bushes were obstructing the view from the porch.
Replacing everything will be expensive, but I was so happy after the landscaping team left.

The place to start is with what kind of landscape design style you want. What you have is not really over grown and messy. Round balls of shrubs just might not be your style.

The next place to go is who is going to take care of this new foundation planting and all that entails.

The pictures are from too far away. For more specific feedback take the camera closer by about 1/2 the distance. Then take slightly overlapping photos that pan from far left to far right, showing space beyond your house with the neighboring houses in the background, as the setting needs to be seen. Post the individual photos, not a panorama made from them as that would be too small.

The bed in the foreground is lovely and gives you a bit of separation from the street. (Hopefully these pictures are taken during growing season and everything planted there is not too much bigger than this.)

Everything next to the house, though, IMO needs to go. I’d replace with thick brown mulch, or maybe a low well-behaved ground cover. A big pot of something near the door, mixed ornamental grasses perhaps.

Don't be in a rush to tear out the shrubs. If those are Yews they can be cut down severely and kept low. Pay for an onsite visit from your local plant nursery to determine what you have. Now is the perfect time to do so - before the Spring buying season.

I agree that you don't have to rip out everything. A goof hard hand pruning will greatly improve the look. Don't let anyone use electric hedge trimmers.

Hire a landscape designer. This is a really nice house, have a professional help with making it look better.

Your are correct - many shrubs ( hard to see from photos) appear overgrown. It you keep some and remove others then your challenge will be that you planting will have some mature and some smaller new.

Sometimes aging bushes just need to go. I prefer lower style landscaping and fewer mushroom bushes hiding the home. Dwarf plants are the key.

Let me add that I had trimmed most of the bushes in front of the house twice, but they grew weirdly and just seemed too close and wrong. My new design includes lots of dwarf bushes. I didn’t make this decision lightly. I realized our bushes were too old and would never grew in well. A professional landscape designer should at least provide one free consultation. Worth your time to find the right person to work with. I have a designer and excellent landscape team working on this for the Spring.
