Some people use runners either side of the bed so you have a soft place to stand. It depends on the overall room layout and size.

I have a 9’ x 12’ s under approximately 2/3 of mine. But if you don’t want to spend the $ for one, as calidesign stated a runner on each side is often used. Sometimes

I used 3'x5rugs both sides of bed. It works perfectly. Runners work too but I like the rectangular rug myself. Place in front of night tables. Part can be under the bed. They are a lot cheaper and easier to find and replace if you change colors and design of the room. I also thought like your husband that it was a waste to spend a large amount of money on something you don't see. But it is also nice to have a rug at your feet getting out of bed. It's nice if you can have more space walking into the room instead of on the backside. Could you take pictures from every corner of the room facing the opposite corner please? Each picture will show 2 walls and we will get a better idea how everything fits in the room. Where things are in relation to doors and windows. We need pictures of the ROOM not the floor

I'm like your husband, could never justify the high cost of a large rug that's mostly under the bed. My bedroom is small and the bed is off-center. I have a sheepskin rug on the wider side of the bed and really like it. Looks and feels luxurious in a bedroom, and not terribly expensive.

I also thought it would be great to have sheepskin under my feet getting out of bed. I never did that but costco usually has some a couple different colors.

Had area rugs by my bed for years, never had a problem with slipping, always used pads for that and to protect the floor. I at one time had an octagon rug on one side and a runner on the other. If it works for you. You take it out and shake it out. Like gramma used to do. Not so difficult.

I actually have never seen the point in burying the rug under the bed so if you like a soft spot for your feet why not look a nice simple runner on either side in a color that works with your bedding but really better pics of the whole space would help.
