Sunny, hot window. What do I do?

We have south facing full height windows in our living room and open concept dining room. You can see the blind from the previous owner on the right. I like that you can see through the blind as we have a lovely lake view but the sun is so strong, it is just too hot. What can I replace the blinds with? Is it possible to block the heat without blocking the view?

thank you!!!

cellular shades that open from the top and bottom.

There are window tints available which allows sun rays to reflect and it does help with the heat inside the home. The installation is simple and we did it ourselves. We installed the light tinted film so it doesn’t block the views. The brand we bought was Gila, heat control window films. You may either get something similar either at Amazon or any home improvement store.

Those blinds are usually what people suggest for your exact issue. Yours appear to be installed further away from the window, so that may affect them doing their job correctly.

Depending on your windows, putting up a film will void the warranty.

Depending on where you live there could be professional residential window tinting companies that often use 3M specialty window tinting films (they come in various "flavors"). My area, on the TX Gulf Coast, has several such companies as would most of the "heat zone" parts of North America. The homeowner applied films, like Gila, that I've tried started deteriorating within 1 year on my large west-facing windows, but those films would undoubtedly last longer in a temperate zone.

I think Irene's idea is perfect. Do you have room outside to install a canopy of some sort?

Love the beautiful rug. Can you advise as to where it was purchased. Thank you.

Tinting is a great suggestion that may allow you to keep the existing shades because the 2 combined might block enough sunlight for your needs. There other alternative would be a fabric that has tighter weave to block more light but the tighter the weave, the less visibility out so there is a balance between blocking sunlight and seeing out.

Not cellular shades,...........solar shades to keep the view but kill the heat and the glare.

It looks like she already has solar shades, are they installed incorrectly or does she need another color?

Irene Morresey has the right idea! Your best and first line of defense should be exterior shade cover. Once the heat is inside the home, blinds and shades will make a nominal difference in comparison if used alone.

I came on here to comment on the rug too. It's gorgeous!

Thanks for all your thoughts. Can’t have an exterior shade as we are in a condo. The blind is away from the doors/windows to allow the door to open. ( it is a European window/ door that opens in from the top)

Would sheer drapes look strange on top of the blinds? Trying to think outside the box

I have a bay window that came with a heat resistant type of glass. I have a window (low e double pane) that faces the same direction. I can put my hand on the bay window and not feel any heat. doing the same on the other window and I feel heat and the suns rays. Look into having your glass redone, if possible. it makes a huge difference in the amount of heat getting into the room, and how much AC you have to use.

i suppose tints could do the same, but I like having crystal clear glass. Solar shades w/UV properties would be your best bet here.
