Looking to improve my bedroom. Thoughts?

I'd really like to turn this small space into a personal sanctuary. While it's nice already thanks to the lovely people of houzz, I'd like to improve it some more. There's some goals I'd like to achieve with it.

  • At night, I want to have an atmosphere with lighting. The overhead light and desk lamp are boring. I want some cool colors and what not.
  • Give everything a home. My room often stays cluttered because it's small and I don't know where to store things.
  • Open up the room with whatever techniques possible to make the room feel bigger.
  • Do whatever needs to be done to make this place feel like my own personal heaven. I want this to be a place I can really express myself and escape from stress.

Thanks!

To the right of the computer station add a large bookcase. This would help you organize and control clutter. Roman shades on the windows in a fabric that complements the bedding. A large piece of artwork over the dresser.

I replaced my bifold closet doors with mirror doors to give the illusion of more space. I have 2 closets which take up one whole wall, but it might work for you too.

Part of the problem is that your walls are too bare. It makes the space feel temporary.

If it ends up being cluttered, then you need more storage. If you need the mirror, I'd hang it over the chest of drawers.

Unless there really is no other place for it, I would consider taking the desk out of the bedroom. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary, not a workspace. If you remove the desk, you'll then have room for a larger dresser to store more of your things on the wall under where the mirror is now. Get two small nighstands with lamps on top for better lighting to read by.

I'd also consider getting an upholstered headboard to bring some more softness into the room. Think about drapery panels, too, to go along with your shades.

    Okay, a few things:

--Declutter before decorating is a good motto. Watch an episode of Marie Kondo and promise yourself to get rid of a quarter of your stuff. Then you'll open up space for things you use and wear regularly and they'll have a home.

--Can you score a Craiglist midcentury credenza or double dresser to replace your too-small dresser? You have the wall space for it. Credenza: Inside you can devote shelves to some of your bedroom office stuff and use the rest for folded clothes, baskets for underwear and socks. Or double dresser: set aside a couple drawers for office stuff. Then get a great lamp with an orange base (or whatever that orangey color is in your art work.) and white straight shade to have a source of light on that wall. Get a bright colored throw for the end of your bed in the same color as the lamp base. The gray one is too dark.

--Put your mirror over the dresser and hang it vertically. The mirror creeates a kind of window that reflects the light coming in from the window.

--Turn your desk to the wall where the mirror now is. Consider scoring an attractive Craigslist long wooden table, not too deep, cut to desk height. Add another great lamp--white goosneck.

--Get long drapes, the color of your walls. Hang them high and to the floor for both your windows. This will really add texture and coziness to the space and take it up quite a notch.

--Love your guitars. Put them on guitar racks above the desk to show them off. The shape and wood are beautiful and should be off the floor when you're not playing them.

    Hi soscookie,

If you really mean, 'whatever' you can try something like this: Bed / Sofa . But if that's out of the question you could try the following:

Starting from top picture, wood door, moving left in photo:

Medium height media cabinet with some storage doubling as an entry table. Rotate the bed in it's current corner so you'd be facing an eventual t.v./ art / wall mounted shelf/ whatever. Not much space between, but it's not technically usable anyway (unless you stand staring at your tv from 12" away).

For the bottom picture, next to the rotated bed you could use a right side pedestal desk for some added storage, something that extends the surface a bit to double as your night table. Little clock or marker board on the wall left of make it look like a, 'work zone.'

Behind that, back to the top picture, a small storage bench more towards the closet doors with your guitars mounted above. You can step off the desk, post up there, play in the sunlight from the adjacent window.

Hope that helped, I'd be happy to share an ideabook on Houzz if you want to message me.

    Have fun,

    -f

Imagine yourself in your room free of stress and expressing yourself.

In this image, what are you doing? Where are you sitting? The answer will be different for every person so let us know what this is for you and we will help.

For me I would need a comfortable upholstered chair but you may prefer your desk chair or bed.

I'm usually either sitting at my desk (with my legs propped up on the side of my desk), or I'm in my bed on phone/tablet. That's the only places in my room I'm ever in, so it feels limited in a way. I wish I could capitalize on the space a little better.

I bought some bed risers a while back. Is my bed too high? I wonder if that might make the room feel smaller? I think it's sitting on 5 inch risers currently. The bed is approximately 30" tall as it stands.

Do find a way to display your beautiful guitars.
definitely, don't go down the rabbit hole of Murphy beds.
i really think some bigger, interesting art, and some softer window treatments would go a long way in making your room feel more like a retreat.
your stencil headboard is whimsical and fun. think about other ways to follow that theme.

You got the bed risers last year to give yourself some more storage under the bed. If you get rid of the risers, will you have somewhere else to put your under-bed items? Reading through that thread, some of the recommendations here are repeats of advice you got then:

    - hang the guitar(s) near the bed

    - put the mirror over the dresser

    - add draperies

You had open shelves before that you said were were clutter magnets (and they looked it). Your room looks better without them, so I'd advise against open shelving for you. Seems you tend to fill it with whatever is lying around, not with attractive arrangements, so don't tempt yourself with space like this.

Would it work for you to move your dresser under the mirror, and put a comfortable chair and floor lamp where you now have the dresser?

Is it possible to turn your bed so that your head/pillows are under your wall hanging instead? Move your desk to where your dresser is and place your dresser under your mirror? Also hanging lights around or behind your wall hanging can have a fun effect
