It really depends on the size of the pendent, height of the ceiling. I'd prefer two larger statement pendants over a 9.5 island. But the room has to be right to take large pendants.

We have no idea of the space the style you want either . It depends on manty things to choose pendants and of course they have a function they light the island so IMO look for ones that shine the light down not up to the ceiling . I agree 2 pendants are probaly best .but we need context

agree with all above... AND how they will look against the wall of cabinets or whatever is behind the island. Will they blend in, stand out, hide something interesting, lots to consider.

Also you don't always have to have pendants over an island ... sometimes they just add visual clutter.

That 9.5-foot island is such a statement piece — you really have the runway to do something special with the lighting, especially since your can lights and under-cabinet are already handling the task work.

For an island that length, three pendants typically hit the sweet spot: you get visual rhythm and a sense of intentional design without overcrowding. I'd space them roughly 28–30 inches apart and hang them about 32–34 inches above the finished surface.

The caveat is pendant diameter matters a lot — two large 16" sculptural pendants over a 9.5-foot island can actually look more resolved than three smaller ones if the style is right. The "right number" really is a function of the fixture you choose.

You could also consider a linear light. Are there other hanging lights visible from the island, such as a light over a table, that you might want to coordinate with?

Waht is in the island ? I had a 10' long island but back to back sinks at one end so we decided to do 2 pendants at the end where 2 stools were

You are going to be LOST. We are going to be lost,. You have another thread with major and length critique on you kitchen and the plans and nobody knows the finality of the kitchen design you fail to post in this question about the mystery island.
